Oil starvation?

The SVX is my second real car 17 years old, i did a couple of auto cross with my previous car and liked them alot. Latley since its summer i aculy have time to do some, and maybe do a track day. Ive done some mods to my car to make it fell better, i converted it to a 5spd put some mettal master pads on it and rear camber bolt, but have been kind of scared away with oil starvation storries that have killed some engine and since i really dont want or have the buget to replace a engine, i really dont want to kill my engine. So my quetion is will the SVX have oil starvation problems on a track or auto cross, i never heard of a problem with the SVX, but then there arent to many people who auito cross, or race them. Thanks

I haven't heard of any SVX engines being destroyed from oil starvation during an AutoX or racing session. So long as your dipstick shows your oil level being filled to the correct level (between L and F) you'll be fine!

I would be more concerned that the transmission would go out!

Do not over fill the oil in a svx. These cars are well known by the dealers to have thier seals go out due to a half quart too mutch oil. Also, due to the high rpm's that the 3.3 commonly hits, keep the oils to a 10w30 or a 5w30 full syn. or semi synthetic blend. A heavy weight oil will not be pumped fast enough at high rpm's and lead to premature wear on the engine.

With an oil capacity of nearly 7 quarts, its not a real issue. For what its worth, I also use ER (Energy Release) as a metal conditioner with my oil. I have done so since owning the car (over 7 years).

Unless your oil light comes on when maneuvering, your engine is getting oil. I have a POS Honda that consistently gives me an oil pressure warning light if I dive hard into a right-hand corner. If the oil is a bit low, it'll give me a light if I dive hard into a left-hand corner. If the oil is extremely low, it gives me an oil light if I drive any way but straight ahead.

Before I rebuilt the engine on that hunk of rust, it burned so much oil that it was always low. I found that even when it was three quarts low, it had enough oil to prevent the oil light from coming on during more normal driving. If the light started coming on when I accelerated, then it was time to add more. At that point, three quarts was enough to get it to register on the dip stick. Adding a fourth quart was enough to get the level between the high and low marks. The engine would happily accept two extra quarts, but two and a half would cause an array of funny problems, including smoke from the exhaust and oil bubbles in the air filter housing and on the dip stick.

Granted, the SVX is a different beast, so my experience with the Honda is only a rough indication of how the SVX would react. Nevertheless, unless your oil light comes on, you should be okay. There are some rare situations where the oil warning light does not give warning, but this is quite uncommon. If you're concerned about it, getting an aftermarket oil pressure gauge is the best way to find assurance.

P.E.T.S. (People for the Ethical Treatment of Subarus) Disclaimer:
No SVXs were harmed in these experiments. None of these abusive experiments have been attempted on an SVX. Hondas have been used for situations that might place any real vehicles in danger.

I'm not sure I agree. I haven't really heard anything about blown out seals caused by ONLY a half quart over filled. I read an article in a car mag a while back that said that most cars can handle more oil than the manufacturer recommends, as long as it isn't a lot more (like a quart or two).

High RPM's?? Are you kidding? My SVX barley breaks 4,000 RPM's during a typical drive to work. The car will do 90 MPH at 3,000 RPM's.... a low RPM for such speed. My Outback reaches higher RPM's than my SVX does........
