Bris-Melb-Bris.

Did the trip to Melbourne and had a great time traveling there and back. We totaled almost 4,000 kms for the week. Result was that I found out what every one has already said; the SVX is one beautiful highway car.

The trip down was a little sedate as I was worried that some of the problems that get posted here would surface. We still made good time having left here just prior to 5:00 am and arrived on the outskirts of Melbourne at about 9:00 pm. Kept the car for the most part just above the state limits and occasionally took it up to 130 – 140 kmph. It didn’t miss a beat and seemed to get smoother the further we traveled, although this may have been euphoria on my part.

Fuel economy surprised and on one stage we traveled 560 km’s for 48 liters, I think that that equates to somewhere around 32 mpg. Interestingly the fuel gauge was accurate, didn’t show the normal empty after 300 km’s. Since returning it has returned to its normal state. Perhaps the problem can be linked to starting and stopping the engine, when we restart the gauge may not be returning correctly to its last position. I will try and monitor this over a few tanks of fuel.

Whilst in Victoria we took a couple of trips up into some of the nearby hill country and tried out the winding, twisting dirt roads. On these roads I changed gears manually as much as possible but found that the car, coming out of some corners, was changing down to first, which placed to much power onto the track, which then created jerky acceleration from the driver. I solved this by engaging the manual button (traction control) and from then on it was much smoother to drive. Also managed to negotiate a couple of small creek crossings with no trouble, would have been different had it rained heavier.

We took two days on the return journey. This was caused by leaving Melbourne late in the morning and my fear of hitting Kangaroo’s at any speed over 15 km’s, and also the fact that we obtained another Deerhound whilst there. BTW, the new dog loves the rear seats in the SVX. I cruised for some time at 160 kmph and couldn’t believe the ease at which the car did this, simply majestic.

On the second day (Sunday) about 100 km’s North of Goondiwindi we got hit by the hail storms that tore through the South East of Qld. When they hit I was on a flood plain with nowhere to turn off and were the water refused to run off the road, very scary driving, had to keep driving and luckily managed to catch up with a road train which we hid behind until the storm eased. Then got caught by another and another. All told about 200 km’s of storm weather.

Haven’t noted any damage to the car yet, it is very, very dirty. The test will come when I wash it in the next day or two. Our land received a battering from those same storms but thankfully the only damage was to my modem which got fried. I’ve replaced this tonight and so far is working well.

Can’t wait for my next trip.

Glad to see you enjoyed the trip!

I had to take the SVX out on Saturday (since Camry needs new tires) and a friend called to warn that the hailstones were en route - managed to hide in a carpark before they reached us thank goodness!

Was back in Sydney for a while but not hot enough so now in Dubai! Has it been that long since I owned SVX-33H!
