Thinking of Freshening Her Up.

So I got a new job and met a guy who fixes up Subaru’s and sells them. He mentioned that he knew a guy that had a wrecked 2003 STI that he would consider selling me. So the gears started turning as I always wanted a 6-speed in my SVX.

Here is the concern, my SVX has 169K on the odometer and is a little tired and leaky. I figured that I would pull the engine and rebuild what I can of it when doing the trans swap. But I need the little stuff like new seat covers, steering wheel, carpet would be nice. Definitely need to paint it and refinish the rims.

For those of you who have gone down this road, where did you source the parts, did you have to go through Subaru? Is this feasible… to restore my SVX. I hate to give it up for $500 on a trade in and this guy I met combined with seeing that 36K SVX at the auto show kind of lit a spark under me.

Thinking out loud I guess but I am interested in comments from those who have gone down the road I am contemplating.

Re: Thinking of Freshening Her Up.

What you do depends on who you are.
Some people would trade in their 2012 Caddy because "it's old now."
Other people will spend whatever it takes to keep their car not only running, but fresh.
As an SVX owner it is up to you.
If you freshen up the engine, install new leather, steering wheel, custom paint, custom wheels you will have more money in it than
"the book would say its worth"!

On the other hand you would have a one of a kind, special, high performance, touring coupe, that you can be proud of!

Re: Thinking of Freshening Her Up.

I am contemplating the same, a restoration. I just want to keep the car in a near original state as far as it's financially feasable.

Nice people here have told me what to do with the engine so next I'll ask for the same when it comes to suspension

The absolute first up is rim restoration and new summer tyres (it's on winter tyres now). Just that will cost me the equivalent to $2000

Please refer to this index to reduce that price to your local level:

http://www.economist.com/blogs/graph.../daily-chart-3

A full paint job can be $7000 etc etc. Parts and work for a timing belt change+other natural things to do while in there, the same.

This is an expensive road, I think But if your car looks like this http://www.flickr.com/photos/tanakas...7624773091928/ and the inner workings are kept in the same condition, you probably have a better car than most.

Don't think, just do it.
Either you drive a rare one of a kind, piece of history car

OR

A car that you will be sick of seeing on a daily basis, which you might even find inside supermarkets

Re: Thinking of Freshening Her Up.

If your SVX is more than just a car to you, then I say, by all means, go for it!
I started my restoration last September (at 219,000 miles) and put the finishing touches on the first weekend of January.
Many parts I found through my local Subaru dealer or online Subaru parts sites.
Others I found on Ebay, and other online sites. Some parts came from the US and other parts came from Japan.
I do what I can, with the tools I have, to maintain it. When it needs more than I can handle, I take it to my trusted mechanic.
My SVX brings me more joy than I have ever experienced with any other car. I'm sure she can do the same for you.
