5speed conversions
G'day all Aussie SVXers
mine's a 93 red mica australian delivered model with 114km and no mods - totally straight! I've just joined your group and want to know how many of you have converted your SVX from Auto to manual or if anyone has kept the auto, upgraded/ rebuilt it and added faster diffs? To this end I want either a manual 'box or an upgraded auto with faster differentials (i.e. 4.111 or 4.44). I'm not into airboxes and filters, chips etc. I believe performance can be improved without engine mods but with significant drivetrain changes. Has anyone been down this path and if so I'd love to know the results. cheers bernie |

I, and several others on this board have swapped in a manual gearbox, and most are happy with the results.
Yes, the lower gears make it much quicker off the line, and if you truly enjoy driving a manual, you'll love it, but it definitely changes the character of the SVX, make it much more sporty, but less docile, but this is common with about any car. It does make the car cruise at higher RPM’s, but no higher than the Legacy’s 4-cylinder did. I’ve mentioned before that people who want a faster SVX and want to keep an auto, should swap in some Legacy gears, this would be easier on the tranny, and increase take off dramatically, probably gain more in the quarter mile times for less money than any other mod. And should actually make the tranny hold up better. I for one would like to see someone on this board do this for a before and after comparison. My 2 cents on the matter, Welcome to the fold,

thanks for your advice - not sure which gearset and ratios you are refering to though - perhaps you could let me know! I like the idea of keeping it original as long as i can raise the acceleration at least 15% or so. but i like the idea hey whats the weather like over there? bernie |

I'm running the 4:11's(stock SVX is 3:54) which is the most common Subaru gearset over here, but the 4:44's would be that much better for the track.
The weather is hot and humid like every summer in Kentucky

A quicker SVX!
Hi Bernie,
No one has done a manual conversion in Aust. yet,. that I know of. As Huck has said, the lower ratio does make the difference. I have been pushing this for some time. An auto with lower final drive gears is the way to go. The box is strong enough, as long as it has the later updates carried out, to fix the flaking facing problem, that leads to blocking the cooler, with the resultant lack of lube to the gearset. I am not sure if the 93 model has the later faceings or not. The engine has good torque, just needs to be moved lower down the speed range, to a more usefull speed range. A 4.11 will incress the torque at the wheels by 18% and reduce the load on the box by the same amount. Liberty crown wheel and pinion set, front and back, would do the job. Harvey.

I need to get in contact with the other bloke - the fellow in Canberra and I have emailed a bit so I will get more info.
He has a 2.7 engine that he is dropping into his Vortex and also has modified the stall converter on his SVX - was getting a bit too technical but I thought of your skills...I will send around a group email. Regards James
