catalytic scrap

ok, so all i see on ebay for catalytic converters are used one's and they are selling them for scrap, why is it that these things are going for 20$-100$ a peice.... i pulled the 3 off my car, could i take those to a metal scrap yard and get money for them?

scrap yard might give you 30 bucks a shot for them. your probably better off ebayign them under the scrap section. basicly, the junkyards sell their scrap to the recyclers...but as it seems, the recyclers are also scouring ebay, paying people what they pay the junk yards for their things.

platinum, palladium, and other rare/precious metals are used as the catalyst.

cat theft is becoming a huge problem in my state, thieves target SUVs and other high off the ground vehicles, and remove the cats in a matter of seconds with battery powered saw tools.

So, obviously, there are places that will give you cash for them

Yeah, stolen cats are epidemic. Also, people gank street light bulbs for the copper.

The funny thing is, they could get a job and make more money with less consequence. Then again, you might have to drug test for a job . . .

There's actually problems with people stealing them right off vehicles. People will crawl under an SUV or truck with lots of ground clearance and cut the cats right out and then sell them. It's for the platinum in them. It's worth upwards of $2000/ounce, and every converter has a couple grams in it.
