A/C won't stay cold

I just had my A/C checked last friday. Test were performed for leaks and pressure etc.. A little freon was added but is normal to lose a little. With the engine running in the parked position the air was blowing cold. Around 47 degrees. But this was not with the car driving around. Anyway my air blows cold for only a few minutes at a time and then shut off for a long time. You will start sweating before it comes back on if at all. All tests were good. Has anyone had this situation before and what possible causes could it be. I'm going back for a a/c road test soon since they say the problem has to happen when testing to zero in on the problem.

Not trying to be a smart ass here, but turn the temp down? I usually leave mine on 68 and its always cold, that is unless I stop at a light, then it gets a little warmer as the RPMs dive.

I wish I had that problem... it's 30 degrees here and we just got 4-6 inches of snow with more on the way!

Definitely try different temp settings; it could be a climate control glitch rather than AC-specific. My teal does sort-of the opposite: On a long drive the heat seems to trail-off and I have to set the thermostat progressively higher, or turn it off for a few minutes to let the unit re-set.

If there is not enough coolant in the system, the system will turn off for a while. Then, it will recycle and then turn off again. It may still need to be recharged if it is a little low. The best thing would be to have the place that worked on it before to check on it again. Good luck.

Girl Thinking !!!!!!

Okay how about the pressure when the A/C stuff was put in your car? I watch my husband service all of our vehicles. Once he had a pressure thing he used. How about the fan, you may wish to check that out. My conversion van had this problem.

Another visit needed

I know buts its already in the 80's here in the daytime. They could not find a problem with all they're checks. Yes I tried down to 65 degrees and it still follows the same pattern. Probably Fri. I'll have them actually road test with the a/c on and experience it. Thanks to all so far.

I'm not an AC expert in any way, but I think one difference between the SVX and others is that in addition to a low pressure cut off, it also has a high pressure cut off. I may be (probably) wrong, but I know in the past when I've refilled the SVX, I had to be very careful not to go to high. Prior to that, when I filled my Legacy and my friends XT6, I never had an issue with that.

In the SVX, the pressure would be fine, but after running for a little, the pressure would increase, causing the compressor to shut down. Then the pressure would drop down and the compressor would kick on again...

You may also want to check the Climate Control box for codes, the procedure should be in the "How To Documents" up top ^^^^

Look on the passenger side inner fender well in the engine compartment. On my '92 there's a "sight glass". What you're looking for is bubbles present in the little round window (while the a/c is running of course, and a flashlight helps to see through the window). If there are bubbles, the charge is low, this will cycle the a/c on the low pressure switch. If no bubbles are present it's either way low on freon, correctly charged indicating a pressure switch problem, or overcharged kicking out the high pressure switch. Without actually putting gauges on it to check the actual pressures, that's as close as I can get.

Possible causes; (1)not fully charged, (2)leaky suction/discharge valve, (3)expansion valve not set correctly.

Not sure if the issue was resolved but this can also be caused by moisture (perhaps oil?) in the lines freezing or blocking passages. Does the compresser cycle? Under normal operation the compresser should continue to run non-stop.
