I'd like to give a HUGE "thank you" to pearlm30 for allowing me to borrow his DD's MAF for troubleshooting purposes........that's exactly what the problem was, purred like a kitten with his MAF installed (sigh of relief!).

I'm gonna try the cleaning technique mentioned in the "how-to", and if that doesn't do the trick I'm going to see if I can swap connectors on a Nissan MAF that pearlm30 was gracious enough to sell to me. Wish me luck, and thanks to everyone for pointing me in the right direction!!

I'm an assembler at Boeing IDS in St. Louis. Started on AV-8B Harriers, then F-18E/F Superhornets, and presently on F-15K (S. Korean Strike Eagles). Never get tired of watching them tear down the runway! Hmmmmm....now that'd be quite an engine conversion!

oh god, did anybody ever see that MR2 with the twin Pratt & Whitneys sticking out of the back? There were pages of forum squabbles as whether it was real vs. photoshop.. until someone posted a video of the thing lighting up its afterburners

If you used aftermarket 02s throw them away and put the oem sensors back in unless you're plannning on buying some cats.

Don't throw the MAF away if cleaning does not work.

There is a poster on here who opened his maf and fixed it. Could be Danny from the Lebanon I think, not sure.

Anyway, what he did, he took the square top off the maf, it is bonded in with some black silicone stuff that you will need to reseal it with.

Inside is a circuit board. The MAF was sending bad signals because a couple of the connections inside had come loose. Probably from the under-hood heat. In circuit board terms, they call it "dry socket"

Anyway, the solution was carefully solder up the loose connections. He put it all back together and it went like a dream.

Nice to have a spare.

Joe

Wink It ain't rocket science.......

I forgot to say, Welcome! to the Network.

You might be the nearest think to a rocket scientist we have on here, so we can now measure the difficulty of different How-Tos by how well you manage to get on with the fixes!!

Joe,

You have been spending too much time at the dentist.

"Dry Joint", is the term for a soldered joint, where the solder has not properly fused with the parent metal, and this is a production fault, rather than one associated with wear and tear.

Cheers, Trevor.

Now ya really scared me!!!!

I have a dental appointment next week, and if he comes NEAR me with solder I will hi-tail it out of there!!

You are right, Trevor, dry socket is a dental term.

On the wear and tear front, I would have thought that a pin that may only have been lightly soldered at the factory could work its way to an intermittent loose connection over the years. Particularly with all the temperature cycling and vibration it is subjected to in the engine bay. No? Otherwise how does it work OK for years, and then start to give intermittent signals?

Joe

Joe,

What you have indicated is close to THE problem in relation to dry joints. The mechanical connection between the components can, and does often last for years. You are talking about a serviceman's nightmare.

To be exact, a "lightly" soldered joint does not constitute a "dry" joint.

Within my business, I had a team of girls continuously making soldered joints. They must have made millions. In spite of close contact with the assembly and sales sections, I never became aware of a single complaint in respect of a dry joint.

A direct line of quality control was never invoked. Honesty, pride in workmanship, decent pay rates and most of all, the opportunity to participate in all decision processes, was the proven answer. The team was headed by a wonderful Maori lady. I miss them all. We had some great annual Company Christmas "do's".

Trevor.

Unfortunately, the OEM MAF is DOA (ashes to ashes...). I tried the cleaning procedure, no dice. So I carefully disassembed it hoping for some bad connections, everything looked fine , so I ended up swapping the connectors from the Nissan MAF so I wouldn't need to modify the harness. IT LIVES! IT LIVES!! I'll probably still end up buying a new stock MAF, and keeping the Nissan MAF in the trunk just in case. Thanks once again to the great members here (especially pearlm30....checks in the mail). [insert "beer-toasting-smilie" here]

Someone mentioned something about reinstalling the original O2's? The ones I installed were "supposedly" an OEM replacement, 'cept Bosch flavor. It seems to run good now, hope I don't regret using them. Again, unfortunately, I had to get a little 'midevil' on the stock O2's, they just wouldn't see things my way........and it's been cold as Hel..uh...Canada here lately.

I didn't see the MR2, but some years back there was an Opel GT on ebay that was chopped, extended, and had a 1200hp Allison V12 stuffed in it (mid-engine).........just point, and shoot!!

Thumbs up

A mid-'90s Impreza MAF will also do the job.

Ron.
