window troubles

my drivers side window makes a "clunk" when it reaches the end of travel going down. is there a bumper or something that is screwed up or missing? also, i have some light vertical scratches developing on the outside of it. some sort of window guide worn or missing? i looked at subaruparts.com, but didn't get any clues. thanks for any help!

I have the same scratches on mine; seem to go away when washed. Mine sort of makes a little clunking noise but I thought it was normal..

Significant Technical Input
There are two (if I remember correctly) rubber-covered travel limiters at the bottom of each door. Usually the rubber splits and falls off. Best bet is to use a short piece of vacuum tubing, split lengthwise and glue it in place with contact cement.

There are also two window pads that rub against the outside of the glass that tend to collect debris and scratch the glass. While you have the door panel off repairing the travel limiters, lightly pull the glass towards the inside of the car and clean the pads. Personally I like using a steel pick and a blow gun, but many have found other methods.

I found it works best to remove the inside pads - there are just a couple of bolts holding them. That gives you enough room to pull the glass away from the outer pads. I used an old toothbrush (yes, you could use a new one, or even the one you are using every morning - it doesn't matter) and canned air.

Should the windows be rolled up or down when cleaning the pads?

Definitely down - you need to remove the door panels first though. Thanx to MoreIBNR for catching my oversight - forgetting to remove the inner pads to allow access to the outers.
