Wheel offset?
I am a bit confused as to what is the correct offset. The manual recommends 50mmand up, but 38mm seems to be what is being used. If the wrong rim is installed, what are the consequences, and does 1/2" difference have any bearing at all on the car.
Any input would be greatly appreciated. You guys have all been a great help so far in increasing my enjoyment of this great driving machine. In fact, in over 30 years of driving, with this being my 28th car, I have never experienced any that so perfectly meld luxury with performance. I am saying this as I am riding on snow tires. I can't wait to feel the difference true road tires will bring. Thanx, Mark and Sher 94 Ebony Pearl, pushing 100K, just broke in 98 Outback Ebony Pearl, 135K, our lovable family truck |

What's important here is wheel size. If you are running 18x8s yeah you need to get as close to stock as possible.
If you are like me and going to run 17x7s something like 42mm will be fine. Consequence being, your tires may rub the fenderwell. I do remember hearing about wheel gappers somewhere, though.

Its funny that you ask whether it will have any bearing on the car because I believe that I read a post once that said that if it was to much under 50mm it was more likely that you would be replacing your bearings. I dont really know if its true or not but I read it in here somewhere I think in the tech area.

There is a diagram of wheel offset in the How-To Documents that shows the reccomended amount. Good luck on the project.

thank you
thanx for the info. Everyone's input has been helpful. The last thing that I want to do is upset the balance or driveability of this car, as I feel the Subaru has done an outstanding job of getting it right in the first place. I will update when I find the right rims.
Thanx again, Mark |

You can go to a pretty low offset without having the tire rub the fender, but low offsets are not so great for handling. Probably the most obvious effect of a low offset would be torque steer on uneven roads, especially under braking.
