Hypothetical OBII Question
If I get a trouble light code (say, the check engine light comes on) on my '97 SVX which is an OBII car, can I clear the code by disconnecting the battery overnight?
Also, will disconnecting the battery cause problems (obliterate the code for good, etc.)? Thanks for answers.

i disconnect mine all the time do to no cats on my 97. my 3rd o2 picks up no catylist but i got an o2 simulator product to hook up to stop the ce light from kicking on (have no hooked up). it dont even have to be over night i take mine off for 15 minutes then hit the brakes before connecting again to pull rest of left over active current. the only side effects are everything resets in the ecu (air and fuel ratio ect.) its like jumping in a new car. it will take a day for ecu to set in new settings for the way u drive.

Disconnecting the battery will turn the light off temporarily. I've done it on my OBDII Outback several times. The code, I believe, is stored on non-volatile memory so even without power the code will be stored as a "recent problem" until it is erased by a OBDII scanner. You realize of course that if you do have a real problem the light will evetually return after so many driving cycles. Dave |

You know, that's a good question. But, on the other hand, I have to ask if you're also fixing the problem causing the CE light to come on or just trying to make the light go away.

Do it once just to see if the code comes back. If it does get it scanned. Don't forget to take the CD out of the player before you disconnect the battery.

Thanks K-dog.
Ok, here we go. Nick, the second part of my question addresses the point you made. Dave, the CD automatically ejects when you reconnect the battery; but the car phone (not cell phone), clock, and radio stations have to be reset.

Yes, correct...just make sure the stereo door is open if you do leave the CD in the player.
