Is the A/C compressor from 1993 (R-134) the same as on any other Subaru?

Basically, I'd like to get a cheap replacement. Is an Impreza or Legacy compressor a functional substitute?

Not that I am aware of. The SVX compressor is always active in "auto" mode and internal valving controls the strength of the system.

Nope. Like many other things, the SVX compressor is unique. You could probably rig another compressor in there, but getting the Climate Controller to communicate with it would be quite a challenge. You're best bet is a good used one.
