Thumbs up Another 5 Speed :-)

Just want to let everyone know that there is another succesful 5 speed swap done. I completed the job yesterday, and the feel is amazing! It's a totally different car.

I now sit back and say all the scratches, bruises, cuts, and headaches were worth it. There's still some minor interior pieces to put back in, including all my wired gadgets....

Special thanks to all how contributed information on this board

Thanks!!!

Yea, let us know how it holds up..... Did you put it in yourself??? I am ordering mine at the moment so it is getting assembled. How long do you think it will take moving at a relaxed pace???? Was there any part that was kinda hard to do or did it all fit together nicely??? Let me know, I'm very interested!!!!

Thumbs up Congratulations

How about some details of the components you used? I'm doing mine now and can't wait to get it rolling again.

The clutch pedal box was setup according to Huck's instruction. It was from a 95 Legacy which I thought it would just bolt in, but it was just a little too short so I had to chop it.

The clutch kit was an OEM type from AutoZone @ $166 it was good enough for my budget and so far handles the torque fine...hope it stays like that for now. I plan on installing a High Performance clutch kit in the future.

I had to get creative with the trans mount, using the mount from a 95 Legacy and putting it together with my original mount. Right now the exaust pipes are resting on the mount, but I will do some correcting maybe next weekend.

I must say everything went together pretty easy, it just takes a little time and patients. Anyone doing this job should leave a full weekend open.

driveshaft and clutch

I'm just wondering which solution you used for the driveshaft length problem. Also, did you use a cable or a hydraulic clutch?
Thanks,
Jay

I think Huck's design is a cable clutch...

My car is 2WD so I was very luck not to have any other drive shafts to deal with other than the front wheels. The original front shafts just slipped right in

I also went with the cable operated clutch. It made the installation much simpler and works great.

After I pulled the carpet back I saw a small flat section that looked like a spot that a clutch cable would go through (maybe Subaru did have plans for a 5 speed at one time). I didn't have a hole saw or punch, so I carefully drilled a bunch of small holes in a circle and knocked the piece out then used a small grinder on a drill to smooth it some. The hole will be right under the brake booster... It's the perfect spot, but a tight fit to get the cable through with the brake booster in place.

So, what kind of transmission did you use? One from a FWD Legacy?

I used a 92 Legacy 2.2 - 2wd trans.

2wd trans are only available from 92 - 94 and some 1995, which makes pickings with good mileage slim. Late 1995 is when they started to use all hydraulic clutch systems and started producing full-time all-wheel-drive.

You can also use the trans from an Impreza (same years).
