Angry I scratched the outside of my windshield

We had some pretty crappy weather here today (ice and snow). The SVX handled flawlessly, but I didn't have an ice scraper to clear my windshield, so I stupidly used a metal t-square. Here is the result. Is there a way to get these out or diminish them or is it new windshield time?

Re: I scratched the outside of my windshield

Sorry to see this happen..I've done my share of foul-ups. If your fingernail catches in those ruts which I suspect it will, none of the OTC glass scratch compound/polish wheel kits will work. A new windshield seems the only way but not sure who carries them these days...getting pretty rare.

Re: I scratched the outside of my windshield

That's what I figured. I was quoted $261. Think I'll go this route as I had some pretty bad cracks in it anyway.

I wonder if your insurance would cover that "act of vandalism"?

Re: I scratched the outside of my windshield

Sean486, unfortunately I only have liability auto insurance. Unless you think home owners would cover it. However, it'd be hard to explain why they only scratched the windshield and not the rest of the car.

92Snowmachine, thanks. I'd be curious to know how much it is. I called a few places around here and they all seem to be in the 280 range. I really had to cheap the guy down to get a $20 discount. That's including tax and everything.

Re: I scratched the outside of my windshield

Sorry to see this happened!
Please be careful on the new one!
Do you know what color is the new one?

This seems really cheap. I remember I was under
impression that the OEM windshield was cost more
than $900 plus installation.

This should not be the OEM type and doesn't have the
coatings OEM ones have but I would definitely
take it for the price.

Take some pictures and let us know how it turns out.

I'd be happy just to know I found someone who carried a replacement windshield for my SVX...is your supplier a nationwide outfit like SafetyLite?

Re: I scratched the outside of my windshield

The place is called complete auto glass. I don't think it's nation wide. Places like safelite tend to be really expensive. I'll take some pictures once it's installed. The windshield is definitely after market.

Then you need to try and save the rubber molding what is on the OEM glass. This molding goes around the outside of the windshield, forming both "A pillar" seals and goes to the top of the windshield. This is what forms the air and water tight seal with the upper door glass.

They are not available separately.

Re: I scratched the outside of my windshield

Most likely these guys. Chinese made but it's all there is. http://www.prosourceglassintl.com/index.html

There's no rubber on it either. It will have to be carefully removed from the OEM windshield.

Thanks for this info. It's getting installed today so I'll pass that on to the installer. I would be quite upset if I got water leaking in.

Re: I scratched the outside of my windshield

didn't get my windshield today. company brought wrong color glass and installer didn't think he could get rubber off. frustrating. on a positive note my subaru dealer said they would send me just the rubber for 27 dollars. arrives in two days.

Re: I scratched the outside of my windshield

I'd be extremely surprised if they send you the correct part. It is not sold separately. The rubber piece they send is not the one you need. Is this what you ordered:
Windshield, Dam
DAM RUBBER F GLASS
WINDSHIELD »Glass
Subaru › Svx › 1992-1997
List Price : $27.95
Your Price : $20.46

That's the wrong part.

Re: I scratched the outside of my windshield

I recently had the windshield replaced on my 97.. It was damaged in transit and replaced by the seller's insurance ( he had separate coverage on the glass, fortunately). The trim used by the glass company was obviously NOT anywhere near the original one. It looked like four separate pieces and there is a gap at each corner where they butt up against each other. I went to the Subaru Dealership and asked if I should take this up with the insurance company. Their answer was that there was nothing else that could be done, as the original factory trim / seal piece is no longer available and that the foctory ones were considered "single use" . I don't know if their parts supply search is limited to Canada only, as it didn't cross my mind to ask. I asked if I should seal the corners with automotive black sealer and was told not to. I asked why not and was told that if there was a problem, I would have no recourse on the matter as I had dicked with it. Hmmm...

The service adviser said that, as it was guaranteed by the installer for one year, to wait and see if there was a problem. We recently had a major ice storm, coating the SVX in a quarter inch of ice, no problems.. I've taken it to the coin op car wash and sprayed the high pressure rinse right into it and had no problems.

I don't like the way it looks, but it works.

As far as the windshield cost is concerned... no idea, never saw any paperwork on it. Although, the first visit to the glass company was entertaining..

Oh.. you mean WRX..

No I mean SVX..

Are you sure it's a Subaru?

Yes.

We'll have that done for you in a couple of hours..

No, you won't..You should it and check your data base.

Oh... Ummm... We'll have that her for you in 72 hours..

It landed up taking two of them three hours to figure out that they needed to call in a third guy to get it done.. And there was a lot of swearing involved..
