You're welcome Paul, I hope some of it is a help.

Hey, if your engine is tuned OK, the only one to watch out for is the transmission. A slipping transmission will return bad mpg, overcook the oil, lots of problems. If your tranny oil is too brown, change ASAP, it should be pink on a tissue.

If your ATF is brown, and you change it and want to nurse the transmission, then you should consider an additional cooler if you don't already have one. A $100 fix, good value.

In town I always drive mine in 3, not D, top gear is way too high for city speed driving and adds to the number of soft, slipping gearchanges per trip. Slip her into D at 50 or over. This will actually improve your mpg although you might think otherwise. The trans can only lock up in 3 and D. You are improving the chances of it locking in 3 at city speeds by holding 3. If you are in D going slowly like you should be going [] the box is unable to lock up because it needs to use the torque converter all the time as you ask it to accelerate in D [4] range.

Thanks. My transmission is not slipping. I will check the color of the fluid when I get home, but I believe it should be fine as it is a BRAND NEW one from Subaru ( has about 20,000 mi on it). You got me confused a little about the driving in 3rd and "locking up"? I will try to re-read your post a little better. Maybe I am not reading it right, but right now my tranny seems to be running just fine. I only work approx. 3-4 miles from home so it is a lot of short trips which I am sure contributes to the low gas mileage.

Additional cooler? These cars have a cooler already on them? Where is it located? What is a good "additional cooler"? Is it an easy install?

Yes Paul, these short trips are worst case scenario for gas mileage.

I may have confused you and probably gave you wrong information, apologies if so. I'll explain; "lock-up" is achieved for certain conditions by means of a lock-up clutch. It effectively connects the engine output directly to the drive and cuts out the torque converter. This is a big help for economy with steady speed highway driving.

Where I was wrong was in saying lock-up is possible in D [4] and 3 range only. It is in fact possible in D, 3 and 2, but not in 1, N or R.

Unfortunately for your US gearbox lockup will only be an economy aid in D 4 range on the highway. This is because for 3 or 2 it can only be activated when the box is in Power mode. For 3 and 2 this lockup is activated as a help to performance, not economy.

On my last Japanese SVX I could use it for economy, but only because the Japanese cars have a switch that can put Power mode on all the time, not just when you hammer the accelerator. I normally ran the car all the time in Power mode, it drove better with it on.

You will still be better off holding 3 in city traffic, unless there are many places you can do 50 to 60.

Joe

Yes they do. It is located in the bottom LHS of the rad, which is why I said don't cover that part in cold weather.

I got mine from Jegs, it's a B&M Supercooler. It will fit between the rad and the aircon cooler and is an easy fit. Just the same I got my transmission specialist to fit mine, but it is a DIY job if you want.

See here

For Sale???

If you are serious about selling it, let me know. I am looking for another 93.
I missed one by my house last year for $4K with 1ooK and have been mad about it ever since.
