Question Water pump... your opinion?

Hey all, I'm going to be changing my timing belt soon and my friend suggested that I change the water pump along with it, since I also have a small anti-freeze leak and it probably was never changed.

My friend doesnt trust remanufactured water pumps and insists I buy a new one.

My dad on the other hand helped my boss put in a remanufactured one and says there's nothing wrong with them.

I can get a brand new (wagner i think?) water pump for 110 and my friend is going to help me install it, but my boss got the remanufactured one for less than 70 dollars.

Should I go with a new one or a reman.? I'm leaning towards a reman. since I can save money. Any suggestions and thoughts are appreciated

Tim

Significant Technical Input
Since the inception of NAFTA the quality of auto parts has declined drastically while the prices have more than doubled. It used to be true that rebuilts were as good as new but now we find rebuilts to be a crapshoot. If you decide to go that way make sure the part includes a more than ample warranty.

Good luck with either way you go. What warranty do you get with each one?

Thanks,

I'm not sure on the warranty yet I'm still just looking at price comparisons. I'm actually just buying brake pads first before I change my timing belt and w.pump.

The genuine Subaru pump I got from subaruparts.com was only $70-$80. It looked new to me.

Water pump

If I remember right Liberty Subaru. Right in your back yard quoted me about $70 for a new OE pump. You'll need the gasket and while your down there I'd suggest replacing the hose running up to the engine too! Basically you're looking at $100 at your door plus the parts manager there (Russ) is great. I ordered a clutch for my brat and had it 3 days later! He killed Subaruparts.com's price!

re: yup

liberty subaru is the place with the discount. about 25% discount if you mention the ad thingie.

i just bought a new waterpump from them a few weeks ago, the price is $74.96 and the gasket for it is $1.91. actually if you ask russ he'll tell you what else you need with the water pump. timing belt was $74.96 also. A/C beltis $22.46 and V belt is $12.38. just fyi.

rear bearings is $58.52 each.

and yes they do installs. actually it appears that liberty subaru has the best mechanics for svx's. they were the number 1 svx dealer in USA and the number 1 svx parts source. also they are number 1 in svx repairs from what they brag about.

Wow you guys really hit the head of the nail completely thanks everyone. Which magazine was the ad in? Does anyone happen to know or should I just say "ad in the magazine?"

I've decided im most likely going to get the bearings done there.

Is the bearing procedure more than a one day thing? Will I have to leave the car there and go home?

It's about an hour and a half drive on the NJ parkway (lots of tolls ) and I would hate to have to keep going back and forth.

If its just a few hours I could just sit in a WRX all day and pretend I'm driving . I wonder if they would allow a test drive for a 17 year old hehe.
