Whiny transmission: A bad thing?
Upon picking my car up from getting that horribly noisy bearing fixed, the mechanic brought to my attention that my transmission is "whining a bit," which is a sign that it's becoming worn. Is it possible that he's mistaken and it could be something else? I have noticed a slight wine that's barely audible, but nothing bad enough to warrant concern. So how bad of a sign is this? Can anyone give me a ballpark estimate as to how much longer it MIGHT last. I do mostly highway driving, but have kind of a led foot. There's no RPM flare yet.
Thanks in advance for any input.

Blunt and not helpful.
What about the other questions I asked? Could it be something else? Is it a bad thing? Somebody has just told me my transmission's going bad and I'm kind of upset over it.

When driving the car with the windows open, which part of the car ( right, left ,front, back, middle) does the whine come from. Also, how loud. Can you still hear it with the fan on middle setting with windows closed.
The next test is to fold down the rear seat and listen again.

IF I PUT THE CAR IN NEUTRAL, IT STILL DOES IT! When driving or parked. So doesn't that rule out the tranny? Thanks very much.

Does it sound as though it's coming from the tranny?
Have someone reproduce the sound while you look/listen under the hood.

The whine I was complaining about is worse when the car's cold and is definately coming from the engine. So the belt is probably loose.
The only other whine I hear sounds like someone blowing into a glass bottle and is very sensitive to gas peddle pressure. The harder I slam the gas, the louder it is. This whine sounds more like a noisy fuel pump to me and I've experienced it on many cars. What does a whiny transmission sound like? If somebody could give me some input I'd greatly appreciate it as this is very worirsome for me. Thanks. Quote:

I'll be honest right off the bat... I am no mechanic so my guess may be the most worthless bit of info you have yet recieved.
I belive that in neutral your xmission is not engaged but it could be the torque converter. The whistling sound that increases when you press the gas could be the throttle body or some-where in your intake. Well there are my ideas for what they are worth. Shane |

Actually, Davie, it looks like you're safe - my SVX needs a new transmission mount before I can travel, and it doesn't look like it'll be here in time for the trip. Give my regards to everyone - the New Mexico contingent is alive and well, just stuck here in New Mexico.

grinding noise
I just changed the timing belt, tensioner and adjuster on my 92 AWD. No problems, done it before. I also change the rear diff and transmission diff oils. Afetr that day I'm getting like a grinding noise coming from where you stick the screwdriver into to hold the crankshaft in place. It just start when the car change to third, after that it goes away. I'm about to make a long trip from Wisconsin tpo Oklahoma. Should I worry about it? Any hints?
Appreciate your input...Thanks!!! |
