CaLiFoRnIa SMOG CHECK

Things I've started to do routinely for smog check:

1) Paper air filter - don't use K&N anymore (esp for smog check)
2) Spray MAF sensor - clean off gunk, to promote accurate engine controls
3) Change oil/filter - burn cleaner oil for less emissions
4) Gas Treatment - Techron, for fuel system cleaning

Do I have to do these?:

5) Spark plugs - changed 2 yrs ago (~30K miles)
6) O2 Sensors - changed 2 yrs ago
7) Fuel Filter - changed 1 yr ago

Had big problems trying to pass smog 2 yrs ago! My (I thot he was sharp!) mechanic told me the engine was "tired" .. to get rid of the car. [How DaRe HiM.. RIGHT!?] Got new main CAT.. passed easily. Also, did the above mentioned services.. .

How often are plugs recommended again? [Poor memory here]

Thanks, Jim

I believe the plugs are due every 30K. You might want to change them just for maintenance.

Re: CaLiFoRnIa SMOG CHECK

If you used NGK plugs, they are good for 60k miles, possibly longer and some other plugs are good for longer. If you used cheapy plugs, they're recommended every 30k miles, but even so shouldn't cause a failed smog test at 30k miles unless there are other issues.

Re: CaLiFoRnIa SMOG CHECK

Consider a better cleaner like Redline SI-1 or 3M's super cleaner.
