doin a little maintnence on the motor

currently in progress of a 3.3L swap into a volkswagen vanagon and tonight we decided to do a little work to the motor.

just had to replace cam seals and head gaskets as motor has around 80K. when i first took on this project i was a little discouraged because i had little exposure to the svx and didnt think much of it. after taking off the heads tonight i am extremely impressed with the quality of the motor. @ 80K miles we could clearly make out all the markings on the pistons (they looked like they had no more than 1000 miles on them) and the valve heads (also looks nearly brand new).

well anyway ive got some pictures for yall to see, give you an idea of whats inside that giant hunk of aluminum. hope yall enjoy

Re: doin a little maintnence on the motor

This motor is very durable. Some are starting to suffer from HG failures now but due to age and not mileage. There are many with over 200k on these motors and a few over 300k miles.

Yeah, too bad it is going in a Volkswagen and not back into a SVX.

Re: doin a little maintnence on the motor

They're great motors! I did head gaskets on mine with 175+k miles a few years ago and it was nearly that clean inside.

Re: doin a little maintnence on the motor

what i found most impressive was the cross hatching, it was all clearly visible and looked like it was just out of the machine.

i wont lie, im not a fan at all of the car, but the 3.3L is an oustanding engine.

if only it was turbocharged.....

Wait a second, you own a VW Van and are whining about a dead reliable 230 hp n/a motor. Has VW even make a motor like that? LOL

Re: doin a little maintnence on the motor

a little history: i dont own the van, the van is owned by a guy i know who had a bad motor in his volkswagen westfalia vanagon. im doing it for a little side job and to learn more about engine swaps. so far achieving both goals.

I personally drive a 2004 Dodge Ram Quad Cab Long Bed Cummins Turbo Diesel 5.9L, measures right at alsmot 22' with the grill guard on the front and makes around 420-430rwhp, so naturally i wanted to put a diesel in the van - too expensive. then we decided to go with a subaru, mainly because of its boxer design for ease of install, and ended up choosing the 3.3LSVX motor. i wasnt a fan but it has slowly grown on me. its drop-in potential is huge since its so small compared to a V motor. now if it was turbo charged i think id sell my truck and build a car with a turbo 3.3L, but i havnt found a lot of information on turbo-ing the motor.

Keep us posted. It looks like your gonna have some fun with that one.
I see the vans occasionally around here, and smile every time I go past one. Cause I know, if they know thier stuff, they know what just went by. }the future{
