Both of my SVXi, the fans always work together either the AC is on or off. I haven't never seen one fan running yet.

strange. when I first bought the lemons car it had both fans... and a problem overheating. I looked and saw that the pass-side fan would try to tun on, but that it had been deformed and would hit the shroud and therefore not spin. On rare occaions, it would spin but make noise from hitting the shroud. I never saw the driver-side fan turn on. I looked at the electrical connectors and noticed they were the same, and that both fans bolted similarly. I then switched the drivers-fan to the passenger side, plugged it up, and had no overheating problems driving around, idling, and through two lemons races (all while running no fan on the driver's side). The third lemons race was different, expect a thread about that soon.

See the driver side will run for a cetain amount of thime then the pass side wil kick on then turn off i'm assuming when the temp gets to where it needs to be then it kicks off untill it's needed again.

I thought only one fan would come on unless you had your a/c turned on then both fans would be on. Also I thought there was variable speeds depending on temp. I am looking at Mishimoto fans as a potential upgrade. It would be nice if I could find the specs for the stock fan though CFM etc. to be able to make a comparison.

At one point in trying to overcome an overheating issue, svxfiles thought of having a manual switch inside the car, running through a relay, that would allow you to turn on both radiator fans at maximum speed as needed.

Is the overheating problem caused by stop and go traffic or highway cruising? If im not mistaken it was on highway driving that the problem arose for the most part. I would think that the natural velocity of the airflow past the radiator at cruise speed would far exceed what the fans could pull.

I dont recall reading prior, have you reverse flushed the radiator yet Seth?

It overheated slightly when slowing down to about 40 or less but going anything above that it was fine. And if it overheated when slowing down I just went faster and the temp gauge went down. The coolant is new as I replaced it when I replaced the thermostat the first time.

It would really seem to be a cooling efficiency issue, as the car needs a lot of airflow to keep the coolant from getting too hot. The coolant may be new, but have you removed the radiator and turned it upside down, feeding water into the lower hose port and flushing it through the radiator? This would hopefully clean out your internal passages by flowing water in the opposite direction than normal when its on the car.... the passages are really small and even a little gunk or sediment can affect cooling efficiency a lot.

The only other thing I can think of would be a restriction somewhere in the block or hoses, but thats most unlikely, and you have replaced the thermostat twice also. So if you havent yet, id try pulling the radiator and flushing the heck out of it.... that CLR Cleaner (Calcium,lime,rust) would also help get rid of deposits, just make sure you flush it completely out of the radiator.

Yeah the fan would be a secondary issue though.... even if neither fan worked, the car should still stay plenty cool cruising at less than 40mph. So once you get the efficiency problem worked out, it might not overheat at all anymore. This is assuming that your HGs are ok

Also while you have the radiator out you can spray out the fins as well, they tend to collect lost of rocks, weeds, bugs, etc and also check and make sure theres not too many bent ones.

After the second thermostat and rad cap it's ran perfect but i'm being very cautious about everything. I just went out and checked the relays and switched them around and made sure thier tight and they come on at the same time and not cut out. But the main fan on the passenger side has a bad wobble, splits in the part where it bolts to the fan and from the cracks it's sticking out past the shroud about .25in. So i'm going to replace the fan blade,flush the rad inside and out next week.

I just pulled the rad out and WOW!!! I'll post pics soon. Also i'll be switching to Subaru Blue super coolant which is good for 75,000 and has special stuff in it.
