What is the best way to get paint swirls out?

Just as the title says. My paint looks bad enough as it is, but the swirls are horrible! I had used a rubbing compound when I got the car because there was paint over spray all over the car. It did get rid of a lot of it, but it also left some nasty swirls (on every inch of the cars paint) I tried some swirl remover, and that helped a little. Waxing it didnt do much either. Any ideas? I would like to get them out... -Dennis

Clay bar should do the trick.

I agree with this and you could go a step further and wet sand it then buff.

Nope..Though it will clean the paint very well, it wont do anything to the surface that would remove swirl marks

This is sound advice, though it might be a bit extreme. Considering its a 16 year old paint job, the clear coat is pretty well hardened...buffing it back from being sanded would be quite a chore...and an unnecessary one at that.

My advice... either try a better compund (3m makes some very good compounds, can be bought online) or take it to a detailer.

Re: What is the best way to get paint swirls out?

Also get a decent buffer (I got mine at sears for like $40 on clearance, was normally like $60), preferably a high speed one, with at least a 7" if not a 9" pad, and get a good quality foam buffing pad. 3M or Meguiar's buffing compounds work really well, that's mostly what we use in the detailing shop at my work.

on fresh paint jobs we'd even go over by hand with swirl remover on a brand new microfiber and buff them out using a straight sweep movement...No qwirl marks if you never swirl

(P.S.- Good teqnique for applying wax, clay bar, washing, ect. once the car comes back)

If you use a power buffer, be sure you don't push hard to increase pressure or let the pad get dry. You can easily burn off your clear coat.
