Re: Forum settings change, input requested.

I guess I have to take a dissenting view. I am also a frequenter of the Turbo Bricks forum and they still allow elaborate signatures. It makes for some instant recognition of the frequent posters and their level of expertise. As time goes on, we are going to see membership drop because of the limited number of SVX's on the road. I actually like to check "It's Just Eric"'s hidden messages once in a while.

Re: Forum settings change, input requested.

He can still have his hidden messages, no oone is taking away text formatting.

Seeing the limited number of fonts available I would even be willing to bring back the difffernt fonts, but the text size is gonna have to go, as its too easy for someone to really abuse that functionality and undermine the idea here, which is content. And seeing the same huge signature across 500 posts in a long thread is not content.

There is also room for possible compromise on the images... I can drop the text lines to 5, and allow pictures.

My perfect solution would be to limit lines for those that add pictures only, but thats not possible with this software. I would also prefer to not make that a soft rule, as I dont want to spend my life policing signatures.

None of this is set in stone, but SOMETHING is going to happen, which is why I started this thread.

Thanks for all of the replies.

Not relating to signatures, but thanks for putting the "new posts" link back at the top of every post

That's a super simple setting... I have to run and do some errands, do me a favor, start a poll and if it looks good I will turn it on.

Re: Forum settings change, input requested.

I'm glad you are taking this route, over on the USMB they just said f*ck you all and turned signatures off completely, and any time someone tries to make a thread about getting them locked, one of the mods will usually just say "Not discussing this" and lock the thread. And it was all because a few people pissed and whined about large signatures... Same with the off-topic forum, new threads require approval, and attachments require approval, and political/religious discussions are never allowed, kinda sux... (although they did have some pretty hefty flame wars on there lol...)

Here are the changes:
  • Can Upload Images for Signature: NO
  • Maximum Lines in Signature: 10
  • Allow Size BBCode: Yes
  • Maximum Value of x for [SIZE=x] BBCode: 2 (2 is the default size, this setting would allow them to make the size smaller, but not larger)
  • Allow Font BBCode: YES
  • Allow List BBCode: NO
  • Allow Code BBCode: NO
  • Allow PHP BBCode: NO
  • Allow HTML BBCode: NO
  • Allow Quote BBCode: NO

Changing these settings would mean, no pictures, no extremely large text, no crazy fonts, no lists like what I did here with the bullets, no code, PHP, or HTML quote style boxes, and no message quote boxes.

Examples of HTML, PHP, Code, and Quote boxes:
HTML Code:
<a href="http://www.google.com">Google</a>
PHP Code:
PHP Tags
Code:
Code Tags

What I want from you guys is your thoughts and opinions on the changes.
I activated these settings today.

It appears that it will not affect previously set signatures, so I ask that if you are not in compliance, to please adjust your signature.

Anyone who's signature is not within the rules will be deleted. So if you like your current content, get to editing!

My drop dead date for you to change signatures will be Midnight Sunday. Monday morning if I see a signature outside the rules, I will remove them.

So you're saying no HTML links in the sigs? Am I understanding that correctly?

I'm relatively computer savvy, but I have no idea whether I (and Tom) are compliant or not. An I have a feeling we are not the only ones. Could you PM people and let them know what is wrong so that they can correct it before you start deleting posts? Or at least post a list of allowed and not allowed items IN ENGLISH for those of us who don't understand what "Allow HTML BBCode" means?

Thanks.

Great ideas!

I will PM people first.

As far as in english, sure.

HTML BBCode I gave an example of, it's the quote box that says "HTML Code".

Let me write something up more definitively.

Off the cuff here, your signature is 14 lines long, but you have 3 empty lines, so pruning it down to 10 lines shouldnt be too difficult.

More to come, in English.

Re: Forum settings change, input requested.

Thank you. That is MUCH easier to understand.

I suppose I have to start paring down my sig (make that OUR sigs ) over the weekend. I'll probably just combine the lines I already have.

Either that or get rid of some of our CARS!!!!!!
