For, I only have the 1st and the 3rd, and will be cruising down the garden state parkway.

you will make it no problem. i drove my car for 1000+ miles with only 1st and 3rd. tighten up your brake band.

The adjuster screw is pretty much all the way down.

wheres the adjuster screw? does the brake band adjuster make the brake pedal more responsive?

No. It is an adjustment for the transmission
