Another Transmission Problem HELP!!!!
I got in my car tonight, and left work, got on the highway as normal and the car came up to speed, but when it tried to go in to third it felt kind of like the transmission went in to neutral, and the engine revved way up.
I tried slowing down an speeding up to get it to change gears, with no joy. At 60mph in second, the Engine is pulling 3500 rpm, no where near the redline, so I put it in second and drove it home, I checked the fluid and it was ok. Took it out and drove it and shifts from first to second are fine, but when it tries to go to third it still seems to free wheel the engine. If I get on th throttle hard it down shifts, but when it tries to up shift it seem to keep trying to go in to gear and fall back out repeatedly an Ideas? Thanks Chuck E. |

i.e. is the problem confined solely to after an upshift ?

It seems to be on the upshift only. but it seems to fall out of gear when the
speed levels out and there is no accelleration. if it goes in to the freewheeling mode on the highway, I have to manually put it in second to keep from overreving the engine. Any Ideas? Thanks Chuck E. |

Please amplify --- "Speed levels out and there is no acceleration." I gather there is slippage as you mention over revving and that this is confined to third. Are all the other ratios performing normally ? Do not become upset as a result of the quiz. If we do not get the facts properly nailed, this thread will wonder asunder and you will not get real assistance.

If the fluid level is all right, I'd say third is gone and you're living on borrowed time.

Trevor is right... but be sure the engine is running when you check the fluid... Due to the oil pump, the engine must be running to get the accurat measurement. Also, check t see if the fluid if brown not red... if so, there are clutches burning and this is causing your problem... Has it ever flared while shifting into 3rd before?? I mean did it ever seem to freewheel while it was shifting??

Trans slip.
Chuck, the high clutch has gone. It is used for 3rd and 4th. Replacement is the only option. Sorry.
Harvey.

do not always assume the worst Harvey, there are many other things that could be causing his issues and it would be more effective for him to check these things before resorting to a new tranny

I Checked the fluid when I got home, it was about 1/2 quart low, It
was dark by the time I got home, I could not tell what color it was. If the shift lever is in 3 or D, the car will shift from 1st to 2nd, then shift out of second, but never goes in to third it just seems to free wheel or flare. I have to keep the shift lever on 2, to keep it from trying to shift in to 3rd and flairing. Tonight I found that when it shifts out of 2nd and flares, I can pump the gas and make the engine rev up and down, and it will sometimes go in to 3rd and it will stay as long as I keep a steady speed, if I try to speed up it will flare again. and If I come to a stop it will still flare when it shifts back out of second. My brother will be home tomorrow, and we are going to pull the pan off the tranny and see what comes out. Driving it around with only first and second reminds me of an old 2 speed powerglide. Chuck |

thats some good info for us... Unfortunately, it does seem like you clutch is going but it could also be weak line pressure to the high clutch... Let us know what the fluid looks like when you drop the pan... remember, pictures say a 1000 words

If you are able to, remove the solenoid valves as a set with their wiring and I will advise you how to check them. Believe it or not, a small piece of grit can jamb any one of them and in particular the control items. The idea is to eliminate all possible simple faults, before embarking on expensive procedures. Fingers crossed for you, Trevor.

Transmission
You might want to change the trans filter. That can reduce your line pressure. While you're at it, change the oil to a synthetic ATF. It's expensive but at least if it works you wont have to rebuild. Also these cars respond well to external air/oil coolers. I would definitly check the operation of the solenoid as Trevor and others have recommended.

It's snowing here in Oklahoma City, and My brother is sick.
As soon as it quits snowing and he gets over his cold we'll pull the pan, and I'll let ya know what we find. Thanks Everyone Chuck E. |
