Question about 4.44 tranny and Valve Body
***UPDATE*** I had posted the results of a Level 10 valve body (PTS Hydrosystem they call it) in another thread. The thread is here-->
http://www.subaru-svx.net/forum/show...ght=valve+body For those of you that have swapped out your stock transmission for a 4.44 transmission, I have a question. When this swap is done, do you retain your stock valve body or the valve body of the car that had the 4.44 tranny? Are they one in the same? I'm asking because I want to know if I can swap the valve body out of my Outback Sport into the SVX since they both have 4.44 trannies. (The 1997 Outback does have a 4.44 right? **Looks around**) There is a sound reason for this but I'll post it up only if needed. Thanks for any input.

So far we have left the 4.44 valve bodys in the 4.44s in the swaps that I know of...
The Outback Sport has a 2.2, as you kinow, but if you have a special valve body it should bolt up. There are rumors of special, non level 10 valve bodys, but as far as I know I have never held one in my hand.

But it is the Tcu that calls the shots, it controls the engine torque and the line pressure, during the changes. So the changes will always be slower than you want. In the past I have suggested that one of the other Subaru Tcu be tried to see if the programing of the change is different. I would suggest that the TCU from one of the smaller capacity cars, like the 1800 auto, as these have less power, the change would be faster with less torque control. So it would be worth trying. Harvey.

Excellent idea! Are you basically saying that I should use a TCU of a 4.44 geared car since I have a 4.44 tranny? If so, that makes all the sense in the world. No-one here has tried this? Nice! After reading your post a few minutes ago, I went into my garage and scrambled into one of my parts bins. I found a 1998 DOHC 2.5RS TCU that I tested with the DOHC ECU in my 2.2ltr Outback Sport. As far as I know, the 1998 2.5RS had a 4.44 tranny (In auto trim). I hope I have the TCU for the auto and not the manual tranny. Here are the numbers on it----> 31711 AD800 A64-000 DIF 7321 Here are a couple of pics. I will test this out with your blessing tomorrow. What do you think? Also, is the TCU for the SVX located underneath the steering column? My SVX has drained its battery for the umpteenth time (I gotta find the culprit). I'll take my battery out to recharge it and get it in the garage for the TCU install tomorrow. Let me know what you think. Thanks!

Kevin, The TCU has to be for the auto, as the manual doesn't have a TCU... The Outback Sport, I believe, has 4.11 gears.... Mid year 98 is when the auto trannys changed, I'm not sure if the TCU's changed too....but it shouldn't hurt anything to try it. The SVX's TCU is mounted to the ECU right above your feet while driving. I'd be interested if it made a difference or not....

Huck, thanks for pointing out the obvious. I laughed a bit when I read my question about a manual trannied TCU (Oxymoron). With this being said, I called Xotic Motorsports to see if their dyno is fixed. I left a message with them to call me back (it's between 12p-1p so they are probably eating lunch). If I can squeeze in for a dyno session tomorrow, I'll try to take off work tomorrow. If I can take off, I'll test change the TCUs tonight to see if there is a difference and to time how quickly I can change them out (which shoudn't take long at all but I always do a test install/uninstall). I'll keep you updated. I didn't expect this thread to take a turn in this direction. I'm interested myself. *Subscribe* Oh BTW: I just realized something. I have the Bomz pulley on the car. So maybe I can swap pulleys as well and do a test run of before and after pulley install. Neato! That is for another thread though.

TCU change.
Kevin, what I meant is that as the 1800 engine has less power than the SVX, the torque control and the time for the change to take place, would be shorter, as they don't have the power to waste, like the SVX, that has plenty. So they can waste some in pursuit of a smooth change.
It would seem logically to me that the programing of the smaller cars change would be faster. Harvey. Ps Yes I can confirm that the manual does not have a TCU.
