Need Instrument Panel Indicator Bulb - Dealer Stumped!

The bulb for the "D" indicator in my instrument panel is burnt out. I stood at the dealership for 20 minutes while they looked through the parts catalog and eventually called Subaru of America. They told me they would have to order a few different bulbs and compare them to the one I took out. Does anyone know what number it actually is? The bulb assembly is about an inch long and the bulb itself is small like the others in the switches.

Why not ask here for some?

I have all of them since I don't need them with a 5MT.

In the meantime you can always use the bulb from "1", "2" or "3"

I just looked on Subaruparts.com and found it right away. Part#85066PA030 1.12 watt bulb - $5 each. Took a whole 30 seconds.

Always come here first to ask for parts...were probably better than most dealers. Dave from the northeast is a great person to talk to about parts since he works in the dealership....red95svx is his handle on the network.

No problem, it hasn't been much above 25 degrees here lately so I havent been too motivated to work on it anyway.

Thanks

You can also get the little bulb itself from an electrical shop for a few cents each. Then you put the new bulb into the old plastic "stem" and wind the wires of the new bulb indentically to the old one (they go though the stem and sortof wind around the base of it - hard to explain but easy when you are holding it and looking). I got ones that were 2 watts I think, and i can´t determine the difference in brightness. Also you can get the right size to remount the old coloured boot as well!!
I bought 20 of the little buggers for nothing and use them for all the different panel lights.

I bought that little bulb to put in the plastic stem.....For me it was too difficult because the bulb was too low in the stem....a spacer needed to be placed under the bulb...(someone has a thread about modifying this)....but I thought it was too much work....I had a hard time holding the filament wires to bend and solder at the same time.....Personally it's just easier to buy all the bulb assemblies at once.

Are you talking about the little ones that go in the switches below the instrument panel, or the transmission indicator lights? He is talking about the transimission indicator lights. The others are a buger to work with and I just get the whole light to replace them with. It's not worth it to me.

Transmission indicators in between the tach and speedo......Yes they are a pain in the rump to just replace the bulb itself.....I'm saying it's easier to buy the whole thing as the part number originally listed in the thread.

Do you remember someone posting something about just replacing the bulb? They said to take a piece of small gauge tubing to put in between the bulb plastic base and the bulb because the bulb that was spec'd actually wasn't elongated enough compared to what Subaru supplies...hence the spacer to heighten the bulb.......It may be in the "how-to" folder somewhere.

Yes, I remember it. That was for the bulbs in the switch clusters. That is why I asked that question. I don't think anyone mentioned that for the indicator bulbs, but I could be wrong. If you find it, please let me know and I will get it into the How-Tos.

It would still be the same case for the transmission indicators....the bulb is still more round and shorter than the subaru ones....if you look at the subaru ones, the bulbs are elongated longer than say ones at radio shack....At least this is from my experience

Ahhh, maybe the jdm models have different types? (but I doubt it..)
I didn´t have to solder anything, just wind the wire leg around the contact area in the stem, just like the original. I use these for evrything, the gear indicator lights in the dash that we´re talking about included. Also for the small switch clusters beside the steering wheel, and the illumination of the switches for the roof lights. Maybe the ones I can get are a little larger or something? Here in NZ to get the entire assembly it has to be imported from Japan blah blah blah. Cost me the price of a whole new panel just to get the light here! (OK, maybe not quite...)
