I am getting a bike today

With gas prices keeping me at right around a 1/4 tank of gas and borrowing money from mom to go to work, I decided that getting a bike would be more economical and efficient. My choice you may ask?

First option is a 2004 Yamaha R6 with 3k on the odometer. If it requires a down payment, then getting that bike is out of the question. Second option is a 2005 Suzuki GSX-R 600 that requires no down payment and on both payments per month are $100. Either way, I am getting a sport bike today. Any thoughts???

Yeah, if you've not ridden before or not ridden in a while, take a Motorcycle Safety Foundation course (http://www.msf-usa.org). It'll save your life before long... saved me more serious harm no less than 3 months after I started riding a bike.

FYI I have a 91 Honda Nighthawk 750 that works great for me and gets about 50 mpg. Remember, simple mathematics; the bigger the engine the worse the gas mileage (generally). Try both bikes, see which you can flat-foot easier at the lights, see which is more comfortable (seat). Check the aftermarket and see which has the accessories you like.

Finally, whichever bike you want, check for an owners group or club nearby. They're always helpful.

Riding a motorcycle is GREAT, exciting, economical and dangerous!
I have been rear ended several times, and run over once, cut off countless times all on motorcycles with the lights on, and now that I think of it, MOSTLY in the daylight!
I even had eye contact with a guy who ran into me and just about cut off two fingers on my right hand!! Daylight, I had the right of way, slow speed.
Drive carefully, enjoy, and remember that you are invisible!!!

If you haven't ridden street bikes before, keep in mind that there are many more ways to get hurt on a street bike than in a car. Worst thing is that people just do not see you. You'll get cut off and people will pull out in front of you all the time.

Seems to me a 600cc sport bike is a little big for ya unless you've been riding your whole life. Seriously, I'd opt for a quasi sport bike, or cruiser (maybe a Triumph Bonnie) to start with. I have a nighthawk 650 sitting in the garage you can have for the downpayment of $800 and nothing more to pay. Oh yeah, it's got the same horsepower as a BRAT does so it definately isn't a slouch.

Definately take a safety course. Trust me, it isn't you it is every other idiot out there!!! Never, EVER, EVER, get insurance that isn't stacked full tort for a cycle!

As for effiency though, you're much better off buying yourself a Toyota Echo with 80k on the odo for the same price then you are going with a bike.

I don't have a bike.....yet, but from everything I have heard, a great choice for a beginning rider is a suzuki sv-650. Not the s version, but the naked version. From what I have heard, anything with farings is a disaster for a beginner. An R6 is a handful for a beginner.

Cannot stress that enough ! I hope you are not hoping to jump on and learn as you go !
I almost got run over by a soccer mom in her minivan driving at 70mph 2 weeks ago. She seemed very apologetic when i pulled up next to her, but that wouldn't have helped if i had turned into road kill.

Anyways, happy riding and remember, keep the rubber side down and the shiny side up

I had a soccer mom in a accord pass me at a light in the other lane in town a few months back. She then cut over RIGHT where I was, had to swerve and go up on my front wheel a bit to avoid her (I was doing maybe 20mph as it was a city street). I honked and the %^&** flicked me off like it was my fault. Gotta love idiot drivers.

I agree the Suzuki sv would probably be a decent choice or of course my nighthawk but then again can you pick 600lbs up? Bikes have gotten much lighter unlike cars. I've just grown up with 70s and 80s bikes so I haven't been spoiled by riding a newer one. Now that I have a baby, I definately am not always anxious to ride like I was previously. Trust me, even a small incident tends to be painful on a bike!

Ride a bike, be a target.

Yes do a riders course, it may save your life. I started riding at 14, rode and raced everything till I was 54. A trucktrailer wanted all the road, and I became the One Armed Bloke. I would still be riding to-day, only for that.
Love the freedom of riding. But they are all out to get you. Start easy, appreciate the small amount of grip you have on the road, and life.

Harvey.

Even in states where you don't have to, WEAR A HELMET!!!!! That and a good jacket with adequate padding. I wouldn't get on my bike without them (pix in locker)!

I vote for Yamaha, but before that I would also strongly suggest to go through all the course and safety stuff. let us know with which u end up driving.
