Refreshing my engine
I picked up the below engine out of a 92 LSL with just over 60K on it for my project. It's pretty clean and looks to be in great shape, and the timing belt looks almost brand new. However, it's been sitting for close to 5 years. What do you all recommend I change on it? I figured some of the seals may have dried up. I already have a new waterpump and seal, and thought about getting a new thermostat and gasket, and crank and cam seals. How many are there? Thanks for you input.

I'm pretty sure you can buy a whole kit of engine seals from Subaruparts.com. That'd certainly be more thorough than just guessing at a few seals to replace at random.
Edit: Yup. I just looked, and here's the kit: http://tinyurl.com/4uyvt For the money, I'd just do that. Hell, the engine's out of the car anyway. It doesn't get any easier to replace seals than that. I'd get an engine stand, though. They're not expensive.

Thanks for the quick reply, and yes I'm currently looking into buying an engine stand (have to have the chief of finances approve it ). I don't know if I want the entire seal kit because I wasn't planning on replacing all of them. Maybe while the engine is out I should anyways?

As you said, who knows what's dried out since the engine has sat? For all you know, when you put that engine in a car and start it up, oil will pour from every seal it has.

In addition to gaskets and seals, I'd go ahead and spring for a new set of plugs. Check the timing belt tensionsers for any hint of noise that may indicate corrosion on the bearings. No matter how new it looks, that timing belt is at least five years old, and I'd replace it. And I'd change the oil and filter several times in the first few hours of operation. Five years is a long time for an engine to sit.

I already ordered 6 new PFR6B-11 plugs and pulled the old ones (looked very good). I also planned to change the oil, then after I get it to run for about an hour, I'll change the oil and filter again. I had a different engine sit for 3 years before and when I got it started it leaked a tiny bit so now I'm a little paranoid. Maybe I'll just take some extra time and replace all the gaskets. I'm so impatient

I just did this with an engine that sat for at least a year.
Timing belt Front main seal Cam seals Vacuum hoses under intake PCV valve Spark plugs rear main seal Oil pump Water pump Exhaust gaskets Thermostat power steering pump O-ring Valve cover gaskets Remove and clean intake and IRIS valve Clean out EGR pipe Oil change a few times - might even need to run some engine cleaner in it to clear up passages (mine ticked/clattered until I did this) Engine stands are only about $50 and will make it eleventy billion times easier to work on the engine.
