Mod question follow up

I asked earlier about mods for my 96. General consensus was a ECU stage 1 chip and improved intake (cannot afford ehaust right now).
Here is the problem.
The stage 1 is available for 92-95 models. SVX's with model years 96 and 97 will not accept memory adaptor used SVX stage one. Is there a stage two, three? Will they work?
Intake question. I have read conflicting statements on removing the air box and putting "ram" or exposed filter on. One side says the hot air is no good the other says the exposed air filter will give a more throaty sound and hot air is no problem . What is the best way to improve performance?

The "Stage" upgrades are not for 96 and 97's. The most effective way to boost your performance is with a different transmission and lower gears.

Agreed switching to shorter gears is the best upgrade for ANY SVX! 4.11/4.44 gears will give you a noticeable improvement in acceleration through each gear.

I also own a '96 SVX. I've added a $70 STI panel filter in my stock airbox, phenolic spacers between the upper manifold and the engine and a magnaflow muffler.

Significant Technical Input Registered SVX
Gears are the best bang for the buck!
Cold air is cheap, if you homebrew.
An exhaust improvement can be inexpencive.
A tune up can't hurt.
Taking off weight is almost free.

Prices for a used trans and rear diff can vary - I paid $600 for my '97 Legacy Outback 4.444 trans and matching rear diff. However, I've seen 4.11 trans from Imprezas & Legacys going for ~$300 (you'll want a Legacy diff only and that's another $50-$100). Check www.car-part.com for salavage places in your area.

Yes, the STI panel filter is like a K&N. You can order one from Ebay or www.subaruparts.com.

I don't have a CAI, but I did remove my intake silencer/resonator.
