Using the ring and pinion (possibly just the ring) out of an automatic '97/'98 Outback. Using the SVX TCU. We'll see what happens. Thanks for the 4.xx club welcome guys! |

I'm sure your SVX TCU will communicate just fine with the solenoids in the JDM trans. The Impreza 4.11 trans that's in my car, used to belong to Huck369, and he had it rebuilt by a guy that rebuilds transmissions from right-hand drive JDM Subarus used by the US postal service. Needless to say, the JDM parts in my rebuilt trans work seemlessly with my SVX TCU... -Chike

so it's a VTD trans then?

It should be the VTD center diff. Its not really like the center diff on the 5MT. The 5MT has a spider gear arrangement for 50-50 torque distribution. The VTD center diff has a planetary gear center diff with a 35f/65r torque split. The plantary gear center diff by itself behaves as an open diff, so Subaru uses a clutch in conjunction with the planetary gears to provide limited slip between the front and rear drivelines.
I did look once at the layout of the VTD center diff on the 4EAT, and to my recollection, the clutch is electronically controlled. It will be interesting to see how well the VTD system works with the MPT TCU. The MPT TCU is constantly varying the amount of MPT clutch action even when the tires are not slipping. I wonder if the VTD clutch will do the same.

If this works I'm going to have oversteer city.
I'm considering attempting to fit the Outback LSD module into the front diff... I don't know if anybody has ever tried putting a viscous coupler in the front. As far as I know the Cusco diffs for the WRX are the same front and rear... i'm wondering if the automatic has a compatible setup to bolt a rear diff VC unit to the ring. The only problem would be the operation of the VTD unit. The signal for the C solenoid is different, as is the C solenoid and valve unit. Put the fuse in the US mod and the C is turned off. On the VTD it is turned on. I drive the VTD in my SVX and the Transfer in my Liberty, they work differently. The way they respond in a corner is like chalk and chesse. The Liberty can't apply a lot of AWD through corners, the VTD can used the full split, even under full throttle, through corners. Does that trans use a band or clutch? Harvey.

Hmm.... so what's the issue? Do I need to wire something up with the VSS? Do I need to mock up a circuit involving wheelspeed sensors? ABS signal?
I can get crafty with Hall effect sensors if I need to... Thanks for the info and the welcome back, Harvey. It's good to be back in the family. Of course, leaving the system "locked" at 35:65 might not be bad, if that's its "off" state. |
