No, not quite. As long as all four wheels have the same rolling diameter, the clutch packs will be just fine...

As Earthworm said earlier, it is possible that you will see higher trans temps due to the higher gearing. I doubt you would notice a difference. You just have to remember that you are going faster than the speedo says, but not by much.

So in theory you could have an 18 rim with a 50 or 55 series tire and be ok? I ask this because I would like a larger rim and tire combo that would not alter the quality of the ride. I don't want to worry about bending a rim on a pothole because the tires are to short in the sidewall department. Also it would be nice to eliminate some of the wheelwell gap, as it stands now even if you get a 19 inch rim you still have the same tire height.

You have to change suspension components to alter wheel well gap. Bigger tires won't change it. I would be weary of an 18 wheel with 225 55 tires. It would be a huge change to rolling mass. 40 and 45 aren't too different. You are talking about a 15%+ increase in overall diameter over stock.

Get some lowering springs to change wheel gap. It's cheaper anyway.

Personally I dont think the car needs a 8" wide wheel
for the correct tire size being used (225-40-18)
RXs use a much wider tire (and taller) so it looks and
fits that car correctly.
If you run 225-40s on an 8" wide wheel, it sort of has
to balloon out a little to fit the rim, leaving the edges of
the rim exposed more, making the susceptible to curb damage.
Thats my view in a nutshell. They will fit and may look good
but not sure they are the wheel for me.
Thats one reason I went with the Murano wheels.
One wheel I do want to try one day are a set of 88-91 RX7 Turbo
16" OE wheels, and as soon as I find a set Im going to do it.

The clutch packs wont wear with diffrent size tires or rims, unless you have diffrent size tires front to rear, then you will have more than clutch pack problems.

Wow, that IS a good deal! I got a set at a really good price and still paid about $700. Too bad they wear so fast, and that mine didn't like MN streets (or had a defect)... because they are grip like crazy in dry and wet.

I am willing to try them again when I need new summer tires... I'll keep you in mind for sure.

I think you just might be my new best friend. I'll have to message you here in a couple months when I can get my hands on my car again. I'm split on rx-8, murano, and aftermarket wheels. Decisions Decisions!

Thanks for the info!
