Angry Dead tranny: Should I shoot Old Paint?

My daughter's '92 was just diagnosed with a bad transmission (the fluid is murky black with metal particles). I have tossed about $1000 in repairs into a car that cost me $2250 two months ago and I am loath to shell out for a replacement transmission. My options seem to be a) slice open my wrists and wallet to replace the transmission with a used or rebuilt tranny and hope for the best, b) donate the car to some worthy charity and take the tax deduction (which I don't think will net me much in my current tax status) or c) part out the car (slow death by e-bay). Any ideas from my brighter, more experienced brethren? What my daughter needs is reliable transportation. I would be happy to trade her SVX for a Subaru in good running condition that would get her safely through a couple winters here in hilly Yonkers. thanks, Nick

Depending on if anything else is really wrong with it, you would probably be best off selling it whole to someone who wants it as a parts car.

Since you said it was your daughters first car, and that you paid for it, Im guessing she is also a new driver. That said, when/if you get rid of the SVX and want her to have a AWD car without shelling out lot's a $$$$'s, get her an older Impreza, or an older Legacy.
Later on, when she can pay for it, she can get an SVX.

Is that what us Canadians call the "Chaser"?

...or are you just referring to the Justy?

Nope the Chaser is a Canadian Hatch (Ea-81) and the Justy is a Justy...

The three door coupe is an EA82 engine/body. Here is a pic of a modified one. In the back to the left is a Hatch/Chaser.

The '92 is in good shape body-wise and has had timing belt recently replaced and some gaskets replaced. There are a few oil leaks still and the front right rod is a little bent says my local mechanic. He says punt. My daughter is death on clutches, so I don't want to put in a 5-speed or even buy her a manual transmission vehicle. I am entertaining all offers. Nick

No pix. Maybe when my other daughter gets home from college, she could take some snaps with her digital camera and I could post them. The car has 126K miles.
