Tell your boyfriend to rebuild the alternator. Alternator is dying and it may show up as good but trust us. It's not good.

If he takes it out and bring it back and say it's fine, dump him, come over to Chicago, I'll take the alternator and rebuild it and put it back in.

In the process, I can replace him too.

J/K and trying to cheer you up. Alternator can be tested and can come back as ok but when under load and moving in the car, some parts inside may not be touching or may be touching when they should not. Remember, it's a moving motor. Just rebuild it or replace it. If you were any closer, I'd let you swap alternators and see if that helps since my car is still OTR and I am in class.

Put it this way, you have repalced a batt. It has to be the alternator. While the car is running, check the voltage while driving. Get a volt meter and probe it at the cig lighter. When you press gas, it should be around 14.5 and when on idle, it will be around 12.5. Do that while you drive and also right as when all the lights comes on. You will see that your voltage dropped a decent amount.

Subaru suggested that it is the regulator. Is the regulator inside the alternator? On some cars, it isn't. Also, if it's just the regulator, should I still have the whole thing rebuilt?

It could also be a fuel pump and or mass air flow sensor....
Can you even get the car to start...?

Take a big hammer and hit it and see if that fixes itself.

The regulator is on the inside of the alternator and IIRC it must be soldered into place.

So I had my boyfriend take it back to that place again and they took the alternator apart and replaced the regulator...Turns out they just "guessed" because they didn't see anything else wrong w/it and figured if it's an intermittent problem, that it has to be the regulator. He hasn't put it back in my car yet, but fingers crossed!!! I don't wanna have to shell out more money for guesswork.

Mine was bad...a couple times now.

Both times the alternator bench tested fine. Both times the regulator fixed it.

It cost $70 to put in a new regulator. He hasn't gotten to put it back in unfortunately because on Saturday he was hit by a car while riding his motorcycle. I'll keep you guys updated on the car issue. Thanks!

just outa curiosity why u all so sure about alternator?

ok if u have not dead battery ur car WILL RUN PERFECTLY WITHOUT ALTERNATOR!!
had it with mine, my steering belt sliped out and ripped, so i had to drive without alternator and steering, and it drove and worked all good.

so by my understanding the problem, the bad alternator can cause only the battery going flat. Had it with mums bluebird- alternator dead, light on, battery flat in couple of hours of driving.

Starter dying- car starts every second time, then just dies, smash with hammer and its ok for a while.

to the post about MAF. car will go alright without MAF. tried that too...

So problem like car dies while it runs and it wont start is something else.
(when steering belt rips, all lights come on)

so maybe u should think wider?......

In addition, advises here are free, checks u run are free, replacing parts by guess... hmm not priceless but expensive

so advise, make sure first then replace...

i got rough iddle for 2 months, and still dunno what it is, but replacing half engine just by guessing (sparks, coils, TPS, fuel pump, fuel pressure regulator, all vacuum hoses, PCV, temp sensor, injectors and so on...) well thats expensive! but checked half of that and turned to be ok...

New regulator...Drove the SVX for about 10 minutes and it died again. Got it to start and died again. Still starts, but eventually dies. I'm at a loss.

I had a car with an alternator that ran for 30 minutes as long as I sprayed water into the alt and didnt shut the car off.

A car will run with a dead alt but not a dead battery.

Unplug your mass airflow sensor and drive the car for a while. You will get about 5 MPG, but see if your car keeps dying.
