cursed

Hi all

well I don't want to get into the story about buying the car.....
grrrr

maybe someday...

now it seems my front diff has decided to die...

so I need help

is it the diff.?
it thumps thump thump under accell. and does it in a straight line or turn, no matter. coasting no noise, no noise at stand still in drive. cv's seem ok tranny shifts perfect, it bucks also...
yes i know already the diff.

can't afford to fix it so.....I have to sit and look at it now.
I'll put some paper under a tire....then I'm atleast using it.

what does it usuall on ave. cost to fix if I get a salvage yard diff.
anybody have one out there I could buy?

this car is cursed from the get go..anybody want to trade?

how hard is it to change the diff? I know the tranny has to come out...is that a major pain?

thanks all for any input

Victoria

Victoria,

Not so sure it's the diff. When mine went the sound was there power, coasting, straight, turns, basically any time the car was moving.

It could still be an axle. On the CV joint, how did you test to think they were OK?

Yes I'll second that.

I hate to bear bad news, but when my transmission died, it went THIMP THUMP THUMP, the more you pressed the gas, the harder and more often the THUMP. I too thought I blew my front diff, but come to find out, the whole tranny. And yes, it still drove under those conditions. I noticed that just shifting into D or R would make the thump almost non noticable. the second youp ress the gas, THUMP THUMP THUMP. Icky.

I pray that is not your situation. If it is, don't bother replacing. Get the 5-speed. I had my tranny replaced under warranty, and the subaru warranty for the new tranny is 1 year or 20k miles (if I remember right)... in other words, useless. Now, two years later, my transmission is acting retarded AGAIN... strange shift sounds, random pulsing feel coming from the shifter (which I experienced prior to the explosion of my 1st tranny)... and I've got a seal issue. Moral of the story? 5-SPEED! Shoulda coulda woulda (if it was available at the time)

Hi everybody

well I would love to do the 5pd. would love to take it to small car and have them do it.
cash is at a premium though, i will have to look at that as an option more

the axles had a slight amount of play in it.
when the car was up we spun the wheels and no noises anywhere even the diff sounded smooth. the tests were slide back and forth in all directions
towards and away from wheels, just grab and move around seem ok. very little play in them.

hows this
when i coasted it down in reverse it moved then stopped
when i put it into reverse it clunked into reverse.

hmmm

drive forward and now the sound is constant.
it likes to buck and clunk when moved in any direction.

just not sure what it coul;d be...

thanks for the input so far!

Hi again everybody

well i tried something else....
raised the car on all four tires and puit her in drive
guess where the clunk is coming from.....

yep you guessed it, the transmission....
piece of #%$% tranny is gone
I sold my last car cause of tranny issues.
now I need to know the best way to convert it to the 5spd

small car vs. make your own kit....

I do NOT want to do it myself, I need a brake from tearing cars apart for a bit. I want a shop to do it.

I love the car more than my last...so I will do this
as I was developing a way to do it in my last one...just was to extensive. now this car I know has been done and anybody is a fool not to do it eventually.. so here is another convert on the way...

help.

Thanks
Victoria
