Unhappy No Gears

well folks, this is it. 150k on the car and 120k on the tranny.. i lost 3rd and 4th on my way to Ludlow this afternoon. I'm gonna limp as far as i can in 2nd, and maybe even get a tow partway home. there is NO way i can afford to rebuild or replace my 4EAT, so I think I'm going to have to try the shadetree five-speed.. that's okay because at least in the end i'll have a five-speed

i guess i'll eventually need a shopping list and some words of encouragement, but right now all i need is a shoulder to cry on..

what is your setup as far as transmission cooler (stock/aftermarket, series/parallel, ext. filter?)

don't take this the wrong way - i'm not trying to be a dick, but you:

- can't afford a new transmission

- have a '92 with the 'clog screen' in the stock cooler

- found it necessary to put in new speakers, an underdrive pulley, drop springs, etc. and yet do nothing to ensure the life of your transmission (less than $100 for cooler/ext. filter)

just a reality check for everyone- think about the important (expensive!) stuff before you add performance, audio, or bling accessories. maybe i'm just paranoid, but i got the tranny in order before anything when i got my SVX. then, the brakes got upgraded......etc.

well, i'll halfheartedly agree with you, but on the occasions when i asked my mechanic to install a cooler/filter, he told me it wasn't possible.. not that i should've taken his words to heart.. the transmission was dealer-replaced when the car was 30k old. i assume they used all the updated parts, but i'm sure i could be wrong.

i replaced the speakers when they blew, i put the ART's on when my steering wheel shook my arms everytime i pressed the brake, i replaced the crank pulley when it separated, and i replaced the suspension when it started bottoming out. my attitude is "when it breaks, replace it with something better."

going by my logic, there should be a five-speed in my SVX within a few months. i have been anticipating transmission failure since the day i bought this car. it's been like a shadow looming over my head. there's a spare vehicle at the house, so i guess i'll just go back to work and start building up a garage full of parts..

The cooler theory may and may not work on all SVXes. The 92 that I've sold to a member here (rally) had 130k on her. She had the stock setup and as far as I know, no external cooler. And the best part is she is on the ORIGINAL tranny. The best shifting SVX I've had and driven. Period.
94L AKA Moneypit had 75k miles on her wen her tranny went and I had to rebuild it 3 times in a year. It has the modified tranny from SOA (yepp they changed the flow if I recall in 94+ svxes)
My current SVX had the tranny rebuilt at 130k and it has over 200k now. Diff is dead but tranny is good. no burning, and fluid is red as ever.
I think it all depends on how the car is driven 94L was my first SVX and I was pushing it pretty hard most of the time. I learnt slowly. I still drive pretty fast but I don't drive hard anymore.

Ditto on Hucks post. If you need any info or help. I thought your tranny was shifting pretty good but I guess this stuff happens. If you need a spar car I'll give you a deal on an 88RX

alright, so you weren't just 'adding the bling' , but i see a lot of posts that go something like "getting my SVX next week, what are the biggest wheels i can fit on it and how many amps can i stuff in the trunk." i guess my attitude is "BEFORE it breaks, replace it with something better." it gets expensive being picky, though.
good luck with your 5-speed!!!

Adam,

If your tranny has the external filter, try changing it. Unless you really want the 5 spd.
