Question Climate Control Problem

I got my SVX after some guys in the past tried to "fix" climate control. It was out of friona or whatever that gas is called in English, so I filled it up and a/c started working, but it won't turn on or off according to the cabin temperature it has to be turned on by "auto" and off manually by "econ", "vent" or whatever. So I took the front panel off and found a tube with a thermostat that goes to the dash board and I think the other end of the tube should go somewhere like pump or something else that will suck out the air from a cabin through thermostat and send signal to a/c. Correct me if I'm wrong. But in my case that other end of the tube behind dashboard goes... nowhere. We have 0.5 Subaru specialists here in Kiev, forget SVX, so if anyone has any idea, please help

First of all, welcome vmar. Kiev, huh? I've always liked their chicken. Just kidding. Happy to have you aboard. You've made the "SVX World Network" even more global than it has been.

As for your climate control problem. Where does this "tube" run from. Is it at the "sensor" on the dash? I'll have a look at my service manuals tonight and try to chase your problem down. Is this just a "clear tube" or are their actual electrical connectors associated with it. Just trying to get as much info as possible, so that when I see the "tube" I'll be able to identify it in a diagram. If the diagram is not too "disjointed" or flows across a couple of pages, I may just scan it and e-mail it to you.

Anyway, we'll figure it out somehow. You may try posting this in "eddycat's garage." "Eddy" is a Subaru Senior Master Technician and may be able to give you an immediate answer. And, don't mind his "brash" demeanor. He's basically "harmless."

Vmar. The "hose" of which you speak is called the "aspirator duct." According to the diagram, the duct should run from the rear of the control panel to the drivers side (assuming you're car is LHD) of the heater unit. Unfortunately, it does not show clearly where it should attach. My suggestion would be to get under there and see if there is a place on the left hand side of the heater box that looks like it needs a hose. Hope this helps.

Thanks Aredubjay,
That aspirator duct goes nowhere in my case, the hose seems to be cut off. I will take off the panel nearest days and look for intake on the driver's side. I was looking for the "other end" connection mostly on the passenger side. As soon as I do that I will post the results. Thank you again .
And Ron, there is 6 SVXs in Kiev as far as I know and some in Moscow, Russia. It's a unique car, needless to say, especially here, and I just love it. Possible tranny failure in the future is something that really bugs me. Previous owner had quite some headache with it already & If & when I will face it myself I'm "planning" to install Legacy's manual transmission. Any thoughts?
I like this club , thanks y'all.

Vmar, many many people have prposed putting a manual transmission in the SVX, but none that we've seen have actually done it. All the SVX really needs is better cooling of the automatic transmission fluid.

But if you want to go the manual route, hopefully you have deep pockets. A shop that I used to have my car serviced at planned a manual conversion on a customers SVX, but he backed out once the price went above US$6000. I believe all the parts spec'd were stock WRX.

Welcome to the club!

You Crane?

Hi vmar

Welcome to the SVX World Network. You are adding another dimension.

Had a few of your beers last week, Zhiguli or something is that the name? Very very nice, hoppy and ureic, your brewers know a thing or two.

Regards your tranny if it goes west:

one possible solution would be to put in a Legacy 2.5 auto box, if it was more easy to get. Aredub ran his for a while with a Legacy box, and it worked OK. To retain 4wd (I assume yours is 4wd?) you would have to change the rear differential to the Legacy one also, so both axles had the same drive ratio. You would have a lower final drive, so the car would accelerate faster. In theory, you should end up with a lower achievable top speed. In practice, this might not be the case, the lower final drive would be more able to wind up the revs in the really high fourth gear.

Just an option in case you get stuck. Eddycat may not agree, the Legacy box may not handle the same torque levels.

Joe
