Re: Might as well drive an SUV..

Im getting around 22mpg consistently with mainly highway with a lil town driving. Have the 4.44 is the 4.44 the culprit of the low highway mpg?

Im running around 3 at 65 and usully set cruise at 75 and run approx 3250-3300, I know its high but that's the nature of the 4.44

Re: Might as well drive an SUV..

RPM = MPG U are actually driving like you are in 3rd gear . that is the disadvantage of low gearing . On the + side the car will last

No,
unless you live in a world you never have to start and stop,
has no hills,
and you never have to get your car up to speed.

That is what I use 1st ,2nd, 3rd. and 4th for. high-way I stay in 5th and that is final gear ratio controls RPM over distance.. around town the 4:44 will most likely get better MPG.
when i had my old 56 chevy i blew a rear end every month . I used up every one the junk yard had . Went from 3:08 to 4:56 and I could tell what I had by my MPG and my RPM in 3rd. (high gear) and they were strongly related

A MT will have better mileage because the torque converter in an auto slips when accelerating and sucks up gas and power.

Re: Might as well drive an SUV..

Does the SVX have a lockup torque converter. On the old GM cars we put in a switch to lock the converter.

Re: Might as well drive an SUV..

I know the thread is old but I finally found a solution to this issue..

I replaced my 180k engine with a 95k engine with mostly new parts. A costly, yet effective way to remedy the issue but I am very happy with OT's work, as I always am. I also have no more smoke coming from the passenger side exhaust pipes.

Just thought I'd update.
