Question Bad struts or springs?

Ok so I have a quick questions about suspension. I tried searching and couldn't find the answer I was looking for so I apologize if someone has already asked...

I know that I need something new for my suspension but I'm not really sure which parts. My car is very bouncy I can simply lean on the drivers side front bumper and it will drop real far. Also, I bottom out over speed bumps even when I go extremely slow like 2 or 3 mph...I was looking under the car the other day and the struts look real new, like all the rubber looks nice and clean and black still...the springs on the other hand have a lot of rust so I'm not sure If I need to replace both or just springs...and where I good place to buy them is

Thanks!

Re: Bad struts or springs?

I would think the springs are junk, I replaced my springs and it made a difference. That being said you need to pull the struts from the springs to find out if they are really good. the spring even when bad will pull the strut back out. If your bottoming out over bumps it sounds like the strut is also junk as it should cushion and absorb the movement of the wheel.

I thought that the springs were what absorbed all the bumps? I thought the struts were just there to keep you from bouncing constantly...so the only way to know is to take the suspension apart?

Its been my experience the struts dampen the movement but they also will keep you from bottoming out on slow, really slow speed bumps like you spoke of.
They would do nothing if you hit them at higher speeds.
An as to the only way to know if they are bad would be to take them apart because even bad springs would pull the strut back out, or even not allow it to compress by hand.

Re: Bad struts or springs?

So I did a "strut test" that I saw on a different thread aka pushing down on each corner of the car and seeing if the car bounces or just goes down and then up...the results!! The only corner that bounced was the front drivers side all others just went down and came up....sooooo do I replace everything or just the front drivers side??

When replacing if your not doing all corners you should do front or rear in pairs.

Re: Bad struts or springs?

Ok so I guess I'll do front springs and struts and then do the rear later on
