Question cam plug replacement

As i was replacing the cam cover gaskets last weekend i noticed the plug on the left side is leaking and i'm wondering if i need a special tool to install the new one or will a large socket maybe work.it's crude but effective.I don't think anyone around here rents that type of thing.Anyone have a tip? I know i should replace both sides but i can't afford the labor to do a complete belt/pulley removal to do the seals as well so i would like to do just the plugs. thanks dennis

Re: cam plug replacement

The plugs are easy, just pull the end covers off and pull the old ones out. The use a small bead of sealant of the new ones and drop them in. I use a small dead-blow hammer to tap them into place when I am not removing the front bearing caps. Just be sure they go in relatively easily... if you find yourself using a lot of force, it is likely the cap has gotten caught on an edge and is tearing the rubber.
