trany Question

Hi gang

I have been thinking about our transmissions, and would like to know why does the trans fluild have to reach a certain tempeture before the trans will lock up the tourqe converter? I have had two FWD vans that will lock up the tourqe converter as soon as you reach the proper speed, around 45 mph.

It acts as a type of thermostat. Normal running temperature is 140*F-200* In the colder months it will take longer to get it up to temperature if the T/C locks normally, so it will not lock until it reaches 140*F to warm up the transmission faster
