Question Tranny issue, or not? ...and a few other questions

I bought a '92 black LS-L yesterday

I bought it thinking it wouldn't shift past 2nd gear, so I was thinking maybe tranny...maybe something simple.

However.....! I picked it up, and it shifted fine all the way through the gears. Better than my '95 in fact! Lol so I have a few questions:

1. Why would it not shift past 2nd for a while, and then suddenly start working again? Woudl it do this if it had sat for a while maybe?

2. The speedometer doesn't work. Where are both ends of the cable, and could it just be loose and not work? He said he was working before he parked it.

3. The Shift Lock button is up. How do I get this down again so I don't need to puch it to get out of "P"?

4. The check engine light is on, but no power light flashing when I start the car. It drove fine all the way home, and didn't take any fluid. Any idea what might cause this...02 sensor?

Ok, that's it Let me know what you think!

The first thing I would do is check the tranny fluid and change some of it. It still may have a problem, because they seldom heal on their own. I would just watch it closely. If it checks out ok, I would get a cooler on it asap.

Next, I would pull the codes on it and see why the CEL is on. It is hard to tell by guessing what it is. (check the How-To Docs to find codes)

Next, the shift lock button should be up. You push it when you want to move it out of Park.

I am not sure about the speedo cable.

Good luck and have fun with the new SVX.

Speedo issue

There is no speedometer cable on any SVX. We have an electronic one. There is a sending unit on the front of the transmission and a secondary one on the back.

The secondary one is there to help control the AWD so it tells the computer when the two do not match, wheels slipping. <--I think

The front sending unit is a plug with two wires and then it justs unscrews. you do have to align it up so that the slot matches the T bar.

SVX sending unit on right side, Impreza mechanical unit on left.

sending unit in tranny, just forward of the diff stick(yellow).

You could check wire at the tranny to ensure that they are connected. I am not sure of the current, ohms or whatever it puts out to check if it is good or not.

Hope this helps a little
Steve

good to know!

So, if the speedo doesn't work and cruise doesn't work, it could be either of the two sending units? Is there a possibility of something being loose?

It very well could be. It will cost nothing but time to check.

I thought that if the speed sensor isn't working, it gives a TCU code?? You mentioned that the power light doesn't flash, does the it come on at all on start up or is it burnt out/removed??

Was the issue ever resolved? If the speed sensor fails it will give a TCU code. The power light should come on once when starting. If it doesn't then it's likely the bulb is burned out.

It throws an ECU code not TCU, 33 I believe.
