Car Battery
Well i've searched the forum and have't been able to locate what i'm looking for. I purchased my SVX March of this year. It now has 61k miles. The last 2 weeks we've had some cold weather and the SVX has not been driven during that time. So guess what. This morning i planned on driving the car and the battery is dead. It will probably start up with a jump but i didn't have time for that at that moment. I do not want to go through the winter on a suspect battery that i know nothing about. I remember that a "red top" battery was recommended for this car. So i would like to know who makes it and the part # or any other info on that battery........
THANKS

Red Top and Yellow tops are types of Optima batteries. They are dry cells. There are other makes of dry cells like Interstate and others.

Personally I wouldn't waste my money on one. 2x the price for not 2x the battery

The best thing about optima batteries is that they allow you to relocate your battery to the trunk, which is something I personally plan on doing this winter for the Spring Auto-X season

Another option
EXIDE also has a line of these sealed "Optima-type" batteries: I got one when they were first introduced around here (i.e., REALLY on $ale!) for about $70.
So far, so good. My '92 has had an intermittant start delay / then an auto-seatbelt delay for years: the new battery seemed to make it all better, at least for 95% of the time... 1 in 20 I can live with! My original battery lasted 8 years, the replacement (a $39 675cca cheapie) is my back-up battery for my truck camper and still works fine, takes a full charge, etc. These spiral design sealed batteries are not sensitive to mounting location, although I would still use a battery box to be safe if moved to another location, like the trunk. Cheers!

Don't know about red top, but a standard battery should last you 5 years. If you get a non subie battery, you may have the terminals is a diff. location, which is not really a big deal.

Optima's are the only batteries i know of, that is until the above post, that are sealed so that the battery fumes don't enter your cabin, and since they are lethal, not a good idea. I am not entirely sure on this, but i believe that it is hydrogen that is released, and is potentially dangerous. With the optima or other sealed batteries however, you do not have to worry about this, or the possiblility of battery acid spilling out if the battery falls over.

Remember some Audi's have had batteries under the rear pass seat since the early 80s and aside from the occational arrant acceleration no one has died, been injured, etc. Any battery for racing purposes must be in a box regardless if it is in the cabin area.

Exicde Orbitals are gell cells like Optimas and have a much better warranty through NAPA (maybe others). Unlike Optimas, Exide has a replacement warranty for like 2 years and then prorate for 5 years. Red Optima is 2 year pro-rate only I believe. Of course, you can get traditional wet cell batts as well for a lot less money.

I got an Everstart Maxx battery from Wal-Mart. It's a deep cycle battery and puts out more cca than any other battery I'e seen (1050 cca). It also comes with a 72 month pro-rate warranty and 36 mo free replacement. Plus it was only $58.

I was checking those batteries out the other day. Does your batt leak up top at all? The last wet cell I had did leaked all over the area and took the paint off in some areas Thanks.

Also iirc Interstate sells a sealed battery that is actually made by optima and sells it for (slightly) less money.
