Question Transmission question

Hey guys,

My tranny died the other day and was wondering if I can get a tranny off of a 1994 Front wheel drive SVX whereas my SVX is an All Wheel Drive 1992.

Any ideas?

Thanks!

You can, but you're going to need a few other peripheral parts like the tranny mount and TCU.

It's not really worth it. My recommendation is to find an AWD tranny.

are you then planning to give up the AWD capability? The transmission should fit with no problems, but I think the differential uses a different gear ratio, so you won't be able to add-on AWD in the future.

I can tell you from experience that it is cheaper to pick up a newer Impreza or Legacy transmission, and rear differential. I got a 98 Impreza transaxle ($650, 29k miles) and a 97 Legacy rear diff (from a manual shift car, $150, 46k miles).

there's enough info in the various threads to explain the general ideas of how to make this swap, and great people on the forum to help you through the job (although I have to admit my parts are on the garage floor waiting on time & $$ for the few final bits).

I would only do this if you're interested in the shorter diff ratios. I don't think you can save any money by buying more parts.

But to answer your question about 'adding' AWD to a FWD tranny later, I'm sure you could but it'd be anothr question of 'would you want to?' There are internal differences between the AWD and FWD trannies.
