SVX use dry sump?
Does the oil system in a SVX use a dry sump system?

I don't know of any production car that does.
The new BMW V10 that'll be in the new M5 supposedly has a dry sump, but really it's just an extra pump thrown in there, I think.

No, no....
In fact, I've been told, the stock pan is baffled well enough to not even have to think about adding a hydraulic accumulator to prevent oil starvation in high g turns. -Bill

Porsche's have dry sump systems from the factory. I was reading something about boxer engines using them, so I wasnt sure if the SVX followed...

This seemingly illogical procedure is necessary because the 911 engine has a “dry sump” lubrication system just like those used on many racing and most aircraft engines. When the engine is at normal operating temperature the oil reserve is all pumped out of the crankcase, through the filter, and into the oil tank. This situation prevents the oil from surging and splashing around in the crankcase, thereby reducing windage losses. Thus the engine can produce more power output and the oil has less heat to disperse.

Anyway, I didn't know that Posche engines had dry sumps. I just looked around a little and it seems that the practice is a holdover from their air-cooled days.

However...
I have read about some aircraft-modded SVX engines with dry-sump systems installed... I d something once and got some amateur aircraft site talking about it... I don't know the cost/availability/form/functionality/etc. of these systems, or how they'd fit on the engine in a car, but if you decide to stick your engine in a plane, you should be set |
