Differential or bearings? My turn in the Barrel!!!

After a long afternoon of stop and go traffic mixed with the occasional 80 mph sprint, a LOUD noise erupted from the rear of my '96.

A little history before I begin. *I don't know the history of this 124K '96, but she is in great shape and hasn't given me any real problems since I bought her in April.

There has always been some rear end noise, but I chalked that up to tire noise ( Toyo Proxes ) that increased with speed but wasn't really remarkable.

Tonight's noise began soon after a spirited cornering onto the New Jersey turnpike from the Garden state Parkway. It was a 15 mph turn taken at 35+. Not smart, but not too outrageous either.

The noise started to overcome the CD (Tool, if you were wondering) I was playing and sounded like a loud gyro, a whirring as if a gear was spinning at a high RPM. Noise did not change with varying road surface, or with transmission in neutral (tried that later at a lower speed). Noise became alarmingly loud and I slowed down and pulled over to get a visual. Felt ok about driving home the final 20+ miles in the slow lane at 60 mph +/-.

At very low speed (less than 10 mph) there is no telltale bearing grind, or any noise at all. Over 15~20, the noise begins and picks up resonance with speed increase. Still sounding like a whirring gyro, but LOUD.

Transmission shifts were flawless as they have always been, though I am sure the stop and go had things pretty hot!

When I stopped, I touched the wheels, the rotors and finally the rear differential. All were hot to the touch (understandable after 5 hrs of Philly~North Jersey and back traffic.)

No visible fluid loss, though I will have to wait 'till the morning to check the rear diff fluid.

I need a few learned opinions before I start putting a Subaru Tech's kids through College!

Any recommendations for service in the Philadelphia~Cherry Hill area? She's DEFINITLY off the road until I get this figured out.

Send PM's to RSVX (Chris Ponzini) and SVX-Roo (Ken B.) for dealer service recommendations in the Cherry Hill NJ area.
I can only say the following:
Go to Rafferty In Newtown Square PA and have Charlie work on your car. They will be expensive and I think that's too far for you.
Also, stay away from Concorville Subau- Nissan and Matt Slap Subaru.

Good Luck.

Glad I read this thread.......

I was thinking of taking my SVX to Concordville for my bearing repair. We just bought a WRX from them last week.

**Troubleshooting**

Had a friend drive aropond the block a few times with me 1/2 in the trunk with the back seatrest folded down. The noise begins at any speed and is DEFINITLY louder on the drivers' side. This points to the bearing, but I still cannot beleive the noise it produces. It's like a reduction gear spinning and grinding and the vibration it creates makes some things in the car rattle.

Before I head to Cherry Hill Subaru, is there any other troubleshooting I should do?

Hmm? It seems if it's cousing a vibration it's probly the rear diff. I haven't heard of any bearings doing that. Your best bet is to just bring it to a refered tech and have them find out what it is. Don't just go in there and say ( I want a new drivers side rear bearing) only to have them tell you after that your rear pinion bearing is shot.

The vibration causes me concern too. It's not there all the time, but at certain speeds a vibe comes up that wasn't there before.

Just back from Cherry Hill Subaru. The SVX is back on the road!!

It was the wheel bearing. I cannot beleive the kind of noise it made....now I know! If you have a freight train noise bearing down on you, eminating from your trunk, it's likely a bearing!

Cherry Hill Subaru was great and their SVX guy Bill seemed to know his way around the car.

It was interesting to see the people looking at WRX' there turn to look at the SVX as if it was something that just hit the market!

As I've said in another post, if a bearing is bad to warrant replacement then you will be able to hear it if you jack the wheel(s) and spin the tire by hand.
