Red face Near Dead Transmission??

I was on my way to school today in my 92 SVX and going down a fairly steep hill with a pretty sharp curve at the bottom...within a mile of my house so nothing was really warmed up yet. 1/2way through the turn I hear the engine rev up, so I looked at the Tach. and saw the needle coming down from redline. After the RPM's went down I continued to drive slowly and then tried to speed up but decided not to since it would not upshift and the RPM's just continued to increase. I drove for about another mile and pulled into a guy that my family knows who has a small garage. Please don't tell me that this might call for a complete rebuild...but what happened today?

Okay. I won't tell you.

Sounds like the planetary, but, can't confirm w/out being there. I sincerely hope I'm wrong, though.

My wifes tranny did the same thing before it went. Sorry to hear it. It had about another 30 miles in it after it did the rev going downhill.

Sounds like my '92. I lost 3rd and 4th one day. When I would drive the car in "Drive", it would neutral out when it went to shift into 3rd gear and then jump right back into 2nd and run it to redline.

Although, I guess it could have locked into 3rd gear (limp home mode) but I think you would have noticed this.

Randy,

What exactly happens when the Planetary gears go?

Basically, your car doesn't. It's the worst thing that can happen to the tranny.

Nope. You're likely gonna need a rebuild or a swap.

I bought a used (86K) tranny on e-bay for under 500.00. I had it rebuilt (just to be safe) and installed for another 1,200.00. Anywhere else I could've probably had a suby reman put in for what I paid, but, locally, they wanted 4,600.00 for the reman + install. For that amount of cash, I could have had a Level 10 upgrade. A suby reman and install will cost somewhere around 3 Grand (unless you're in Evansville Indiana) and you'll get a 2 year guarantee. For a rebuild, it's going to cost around 1,500.00. It's a crapshoot, unless you know someone who REALLY knows the SVX tranny (rare birds indeed) even if they give you a 1 year warranty.

Also apparently the most expensive thing that can happen to the tranny, based upon the estimate I got from my Subaru mechanic this past week

I was heading home from the USGP, heard a funny noise, then the RPMs shot. This was only about one mile from home, so I tried to limp it. I was at the base of a small hill, and barely made it to the top. Pulled over and called for a flatbed

I checked the fluid though, and it was not burnt or dirty. Mechanic said that if it went quickly, the fuild wouldn't necessarily show it. $3500 for repairs, and I haven't found anyone else in the Indy area who will even touch the car "A Subaru what?"

The only consolation is the weather cleared up this week, allowing me to motor about with the lid off the 914

Tranny Talk

$3,500? I think you can get a manual tranny for $4,000, can't'cha? $5,000 with the labor? Am I on crack?

Anyway, I sympathize with you, as will most SVX owners, I think.

Mine did a bad scary thing last week...running ~70 mph/~2600 rpm on the freeway, and floored it to pass. Engine revved, sounded just beautiful...and didn't go any faster. I let up just as soon as I realized that the car didn't downshift. It's still running, and I've been babying it a bit. Haven't had another instance of this, but I'm expecting to have to replace the bugger just as soon as I can. I've been searching the forums and have seen many similar instances, but nothing exactly the same.

Good luck!
-Kim

Edit: You already know about these guys, right? Not local for you, I know, but still a possible resource:http://www.smallcar.com/svx/5spdkit.htm

Thanks for the info. I've forwarded it to a local exotic car specialist to see if he's up to the task. Since he used to build Formula 1 cars, and his shop does ground up restorations for SVRA, I suspect this wouldn't be too big of a challenge. I guess it mainly depends if he has the time...

Whatever I do, it needs to happen soon. A Bimmer-fan coworker placed a listing for a '01 330Ci Sport on my desk. I felt guilty as I seriously contemplated replacement vs repair
