Proper break pad and rotor break in.

I was just wondering since I'll be changing all the rotors and pads tomorrow, what the proper break in process is for the pads and rotors. I've heard several slow stops from 40mph or several hard stops from 20miles per hour. I've heard conflicts from all over. I just want to avoid pre-mature warping. So if anyone can help me out that'd be great.

i do several slow stops from 60, but your brakes may vary. i also rub the pad surfaces together before installing them to remove any surface irregularities - i read that somewhere once, makes sense i guess.

I advise to go slow at first. No more than 40 mph stops. Check and see if the pads are smoking after a few stops. Don't go faster if there smoking until it clears up. I like the idea of rubbing the pads together to smooth them out.

Bedding pads.

The main point in bedding pads, is that you don't want to over heat the high spots on the pad, as this can cause a hard spot on the pad that can cause wear on the disk and cause the pad surface to crack.

Make sure there is no oil or grease on the pads or disc as this can cause glazing of the pad surface on first contact. A light rub with a abrasive paper is a good idea if in doubt. All that said you will not be likely find your local brake shop going to this amount of trouble !

Our brake pad manufacturer recommended the following:

Basic Bedding In - 3-4 stops with light to medium brake pressure from start (90mph) to finish (60mph). Distance between each stop should be approximately 1/4 mile. The pads should NOT reach temperatures ABOVE 575 to 750 degrees during bedding in process.

Bedding in at High Speed - 1 stop with medium to heavy brake pressure (without allowing lockup) from start (110mph) to finish (60mph). Perform recovery stops with light brake pressure 2-3 times. Repeat the 1 to 2 times. Allow a cooling off distance of approximately 3/10 mile between high speed stops.

Mounting New Pads on Used Discs - Edges of the pad surface should be filed at a 45 degree angle to insure that the pad contacts the disc fully and evenly.
I didn't bother with it because I don't think the cops would been very understanding.
