Driving with bad bearings
I think I need bearings on my 92 rear wheels and I want to know if its ok to still drive the car or should I park it till I can get them replaced? How much will a dealer charge to change them?

You can still drive it if its just starting to have symptoms. Eventually it will get really loud that it will be unbearable and you cant even hear your radio. There is a slight risk that your bearings could seize if you're driving. I drove for 6 months with it getting louder and louder before I got both sides changed.

Just going by what I have read here, alot of people have driven on the bad bearings for awhile before fixing. However, I do know that there was a post of an SVX that had the bad bearing sieze and do damage to the hubs. So I would say it depends but on what I do not know.
I think it would be wise to keep the speed down until it's fixed and in most cases the dealers replace the hubs when the bearing is replaced. Are you sure it's not tire noise? I had that problem.

I needed rear wheel bearings replaced on both side of my '92. I drove on them for about 6 mos. before having it done at the dealership. The hub on the left side also needed replacement which made it quite expensive.

Hi LarryIII:
What kind of damage does the hub show for you to decide to replace it? Thanks, wolf33h |

It's about $350-$450 per side, so have fun... :|
ALSO ... BE SURE THAT THEY REPACK YOUR BEARINGS BEFORE PRESSING THEM IN YOUR HUB! If they do not, they will fail. The grease that comes IN the bearings is only for shipping, THEY MUST BE REPACKED. - Rob |

Rear Wheel Bearing - 28016PA010 - 78.02/62.42
When replacing the bearings you must also replace the seals that go with it. The seals that you need will depend on whether you car is 2 or 4wd. Jackie |

Hi: May I double check the seal numbers for AWD:
28015AA070 Outer.....28015AA021 Inner ? What is the difference between the seals for FWD and AWD? Thanks, wolf33h |

Do NOT drive on bad bearings if they are making a ton of noise. A little bit of noise is fine but a lot of noise (like a personal Jet fighter escourt) is really bad.
This is what could happen if you keep driving: http://www.subaru-svx.net/photos/files/Seraph/2383.jpg

I asked you to confirm the seal numbers and what you brought up as a diiference between FWD and AWD. These are not trick questions, and I am puzzled by your lack of response! Waiting, wolf33h |
