Tire Slide?

When I go around a tight left turn I get a noise that sounds like my right rear tire is grinding/sliding. I had thought that my ps belt was rubbing against the cover because it sounds almost identical to this sound, but it still makes the noise without the cover on. Any ideas?

The tires are Yokohama Avid V4's with about 6k on them.

Binding?

Maybe your transfer clutch is binding.

Just a guess. Try turning tightly on a gravelled surface, and don't power on enough to cause traction slips. If your rears are binding, you will hear the noise and see the marks.

Be sure both rears, in fact all four tyres are to the correct pressure before you do this. A severely deflated tyre will have a much lower and incorrect rolling radius, and can cause this binding.

Will try

I'll try that. Would the transfer clutch be something that would be replaced when the transmission is rebuilt?

Your tranny is different than the one in mine Steve, so I am not sure on this. However, when they strip the box, they will normally replace any clutch packs that are worn, including the transfer clutch set.

The problem can be where you or a previous owner ran for a while with mismatched tyres, or even a slow puncture not noticed or attended to. No doubt you are aware this rolling radius business is the kiss of death to the transmission. This is why the recommendation is for four new tyres each time. People more used to FWD will tend to buy two new tyres, and fit them to the front. Inevitably, this means different rolling radii front-to-rear, and internal stress at the transmission.

Found it?

I took off right wheels today to check out the brakes and calipers. On the inside of the front caliper there were some rocks in the pistons! Could this have been causing the noise? Could they have done any permanent damage?

P.S. I tried the gravel thing and saw/heard no indication of the binding. I did do figure 8's just incase

Do you mean that you took out the disk pads and found rocks inside the cyclinder???? How could the rocks get in there?

Yes, and I don't know Wasn't the problem though, noise is still there. Definately sounds like something rubbing, not tire squeal. Also it seems to be coming from the front wheel, not the back.

Sounds like belt failure in the tire to me. Pretty common with low pressures. (less than 32psi?)

Hmmm....

Noise sounded like it was coming from the back, I rotated tires, now it sounds more like its coming from the front. Porter, you could be right. Maybe I'll get a new tire out of it since I have a warranty.

Bump up those tire pressures! Mine wallowed like a pig until I hit the high 30s, low 40s would even be acceptable on certain tires. My RE950s like the mid 40s.
