trany screen replacement

how hard is it to replace the screen inside of the trany, and what do I need to do it.

screen 31728aa011
pan gasket 31397aa041
7 Qts trany fluid

Tri-state subaru said I need to replace the screen to see if it will fix my 2 to 3rd grear shift flare.

Also does any one have the service manual pages on this?

I don't have the FSM, but did mine, it's pretty easy. drain, first, then take off pan (be ready there will be more ATF that will come out. Removing the screen/filter wasn't bad, couple of bolts, a little wiggling, and it was out (it all seemed obvious - to me anyway, YMMV). If you're gonna do this and have access to compressed air, you might want to backflush the radiator cooler just to make sure all the gunk is out - take off the inlet line and put it in a drain pan, take off the outlet line and blow a blast of compressed air (at maybe 50PSI) into the line.

you could try a synthetic ATF (I would recommend Redline, but use Mobil 1 myself) but if it's got a lot of miles on it you may have seal issues. Alternately, put in a good quality Dexron III product.

I'm far-FAR-far from being a tranny expert, but I doubt a screen replacement will fix a shift flare. The most common fixes are a replacement of the TPS or an adjustment of the band. I've done both. My problem was in the bands, Chicane (Rob) fixed his by replacing the TPS. do a search and read lots of posts would be my best recommendation.
