FWD verses AWD
I posted this in Chris' Garage, but I'm not sure that spot is still active, so here it is again.
Ok, I have a 94 L. FWD heres a list of questions I've be pondering. 1) does the FWD use the same Tranny as the AWD? 2) is the FWD tranny as prone to break down as in the AWD, or is it under less stress and therefor lasts longer? 3) Does the FWD have the same problem with wheel bearings as AWD models? 4) How do I determine what manual trannies I could use if I desided to do a manual conversion (I think I should have a few options that the AWD's don't, i.e. Nisson trannies) and lastly 5) were can I find out how many FWD models were produced? I figure there were only a couple of years that FWD's were made, so only about 1/4 of the 25,000 made could be FWDs. Any help here is apprieciated |

i can tell u that the front differential is different from the awd to the fwd, the fwd appears to be a more heavy robust unit...
i believe that you'd need to find a fwd 5mt, the other cars came in fwd much more frequently than the svx, lots of fwd imprezas and legacies out there

Mystery solved
ok,
I solved two mysteries at once. 1) found the owner of the mysterious silver w/ no spoiler. Ran into him at Wilkens Subaru. 2) Owner of Mystery car Showed me to Happy Jack's Automotive INC.. Happy Jack isn't just a Subaru Mechanic, he's an SVX enthusiast and owner. Jack says the FWD has a different Tranny and should be less suseptable to rear bearing failure. However he didn't know weather or not it had the same issues as the AWD tranny, just that it was different. Side note: Jack also said there is no such thing as a 95 SVX. No VIN # for 95 |

Sounds like Happy Jack is a little too "happy".
Would all '95 owners like to speak up?

Happy Jack is very mistaken.
95's are VIN "S" and there were 1801 made that year. I have three 95's sitting outside here at Kerven. Mike |
